Secondary to use with cryo cannon?
I've been running cryo cannon + subata and the two seem to synergize really well. I'm running a typical cryo vampire build where I freeze enemies and finish them with drills at close range and subata/axes at long range, and use subata to kill far away mactera or cave leeches.

Most people seem to use epc with cryo, and I'm curious if there are any benefits to using it over subata (aside from mining obviously, but I have a scout and engi in my group that are on resource duty so I don't know how useful epc mining would be).

I enjoy using a boiler Ray blistering necrosis cooker but a 21211 overcharger EPC is one of my favorite builds in the game.

Can driller with no EPC even be called a driller?
It can smoke bugs AND dig
subata is objectively worse for cryo builds since even an unmodded EPC will do more damage against frozen enemies
without a weakspot modifier or volatile bullets to carry its low damage all the subata has over EPC is more ammo (meaningless when you're spending more of it to deal equivalent damage) and hitscan (meaningless against enemies who literally can't move) which aren't valid benefits in the context of cryo secondary

not to say the subata is a bad gun, it's just better with CRSPR or sludge

By the way, fragile remains an effective grunt ice cubage solution well into 4 player haz5, I've no idea why this mod is so unpopular. Skill issues without 360 degree freezing perhaps?
Save secondary ammo for mining scout's platforms from under him and maybe instakilling clumps of angry macteras.
As for drills, them's for DIGGING and FEARING fat bugs when you don't have cryo, not for killing. Bonus points for fearing goo bombers and grabbers. Unfortunately bulk detonators are unaffected.

Gonna agree with Kestrel for once.

Although I generally love Subata and hate EPC, Cryo freeze builds are the one place where I'd take EPC over it; specifically Heavy Hitter.
I use EPC with Flying Nightmare (don't remember the full build from the top of my head). It generates heat so the gimmick is freezing things, setting them on fire, freezing... Freezing part of course allows you to heal with drills. With this EPC setup one normal shot into a frozen Grunt vaporizes it on Haz5. A charged shot passes through enemies, killing a lot with thermal shock or setting them on fire if not frozen.

Probably my greatest joy is to watch the Shellback (big one) die so fast. it doesn't do well against thermal shock so the fire/ice combo deletes like 50 %+ of its health within seconds.

The only things I such against with this setup are Menaces (if too far to be frozen), robots (not tested though I just assume), and Bulk Detonators (can be frozen but my damage sucks). And then there's Oppressors. I freeze them and throw an ax because they unfreeze too fast for charged shots.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm still somewhat new to this game and I wasn't even aware of the thermal shock debuff. I think I'm gonna try a normal shot EPC build with plasma burner, and I'll also probably give the wave cooker a shot with temperature amplifier and exothermic reactor.

Just out of curiosity though, what's burning nightmare? I couldn't find any upgrades or overclock with that name, unless I'm missing it.

Tier 5 upgrade.

"A modified containment field causes regular and charged shots to heat up the target proportionally to the amount of damage dealt. The modification also makes the charged projectile pass through all enemies dealing damage while it flies but it no longer explodes on impact."

it's not an overclock. It is a gear mod. It's the first option in t5 next to TCF. I love BN and I like using it with an overcharger.

Burning nightmare plays a little bit like the Engineer's Breach cutter.
Deals damage in a line as it flies.

burning nightmare is the first slot in the fifth tier which allows regular and charged shots to inflict heat, which raises an enemy's temperature
note that this is not the same as dealing extra damage, though igniting enemies adds DoT which can save on ammo

it's worth considering that although temperature shock is powerful, it also cancels the freezing debuff early and thus means enemies won't take triple damage. this is fine for trash mobs like grunts, but for high value targets (HVTs) like praetorians, wardens, menaces etc. its often not worth losing the frozen status just to chunk them with a bit of damage and cancel freezing early
that is to say; spam firing normal shots into a frozen HVT will do more damage than temp shocking them with burning nightmare

of course burning nightmare also causes your charge shots to pierce enemies, which can be a powerful form of waveclear which the cryo usually lacks. it's all preference at the end of the day; just thought i should mention the value of keeping HVTs frozen
Update: I've given both the epc and wave cooker a shot. I'm not a huge fan of the epc charge shot. I spec'd it towards regular shots and it was pretty good, probably better than subata. But damn, I'm running 31213 wave cooker and it's a ton of fun to with cryo. Think I'm gonna stick with that from now on. Thanks again for all the advice everyone.

EPC with Heavy Hitter and fire damage is objectively better than Subata or Wavecooker. Chaining temperature shocks on big enemies is way easier too.
I'll give it another shot once I get heavy hitter. I'm not even promoted yet lol
The best secondary for Cryo Cannon is teammates
