What is the best class for solo play?
Just got the game, played it for a little bit, absolutely love it, but I have sadly failed to get my friends to buy the game, and since I don't like playing with randoms I have to play solo, after trying out every class I couldn't figure out which one would make my life easier, as every one made me feel like I was missing something really useful, maybe because I am, it's a coop focused game after all, so please help me wise random people of the internet

Having done most of my missions solo, gunner is generally the easiest to play solo due to his survivability and great ammo efficiency (depending on the build).

Playing with randos in this game isn't terrible though, give it a try, though if you do I recommend that you host so that you can give troublemakers the boot.

Not Scout.

There are a couple exceptions though that I failed to mention. If you take anyone other than the driller to on site refining, you are rolling the dice on it being practical to actual complete. There is also an argument to be made for extraction point that scout is useful for his ability to quickly scale terrain and obtain the aquarks.

Once you've got some upgrades unlocked, Engi can be a beast. He can hold is own in a firefight very well, and his turrets help make a zone into a killbox when you start to get overwhelmed. Platforms give him a great boost in traversing a map, too.

This is one more reason I main engi.

Can't dig a tunnel to move the cables/pipes through an obstacle? Time to put my platform staircase practice to good use!

In response to the OP: Engineer is a great class to solo with. They're an absolute DPS machine with their turrets, swarm grenade, and the myriad of weapons all designed to pump out as much damage as possible. They're slightly more tedious as far as mobility is concerned since you have to rely on using platforms to traverse the landscape. They eat ammo like candy that makes Gunner look tame, but you can pick up ammo capacity upgrades and barely sacrifice your killing power.

I'd say driller. Their mobility tool can get you basically anywhere at a reasonable speed, and you have powerful swarm clearing tools, which are also fairly ammo efficient, which you will need when playing higher difficulties.

As for the other classes:
- Gunner has good survival and killing power, but struggles with mobility. That can leave you in a bad place while solo.
- Engineer can work, but is very ammo hungry, and I find they just don't go that well while solo, but I can't really pinpoint a reason.
- Scout can light caves and freely get around, but lacks killing power before you get overclocks, and even then, continues to struggle compared to other classes.

It is fine up to Haz3 solo. I know I did it alot at my early gaming.

my default go-to is engineer because platforms are plentiful and great for traversing most terrain, though i wouldnt suggest it for all mission types as a new player. my other default is gunner because he has great survivability, and his zipline guns can reach places that are near impossible with platforms (mostly ceilings for things like alien fossils), though the ammo can sometimes be a problem (usually not if you get enough nitra for a single resupply). for on-site refining i choose driller, otherwise connecting the pipes can be excruciatingly painful without the drill, otherwise it doesnt really matter for me.

as a new player who doesnt have overclocks or alternate weapons, i would think that escort missions would be best with engineer to defend the drilldozer when its not moving, and gunner for salvage, industrial sabotage, and elimination.

also, note, bosco is ALOT more helpful than i initially thought. he can mine/carry any large items, including fuel pods from the drilldozers, mini-mule legs, or even doretta's head. he can assemble entire pipelines in on-site refining. targeting the drilldozer makes him defend it. pressing X (the shout button) will stop bosco from doing a task, drop any held item and make them come over to defend you. upgrades matter, if you are having trouble in hazard 4/3 don't hesitate to play an easier difficulty for certain mission types until you unlock upgrades & become familiar with their use cases. this especially holds true in elimination and industrial sabotage (these bosses dont scale down well for solo play, especially for new players imo)

Best class for solo play is Driller. Can go anywhere and strong AOE guns.

I don't think you will enjoy solo as much as playing with randoms but that's just my opinion.

Any of them, given you generally know how the class works and have a build that can somewhat deal with their primary weakness. Also depends on the mission type and weapons you bring.

Drillers generally sucks at Elimination and single-target damage.

Gunners have to cope with mobility.

Scouts generally suck at clearing groups.

Engineers can do everything, but they have to do some micromanagement.

However, if you feel like you need missions to feel easier solo then learn to use Bosco effectively for multitasking and utility so you can get through missions faster.

I like to build Bosco with Dig/Mining Speed, Light, Cryo/Fear Rockets and Electric Bullets for all the utility.

Dig/Mining Speed and Light just speeds up getting minerals up high as well as digging through dirt without you doing it and being in a vulnerable spot. Cryo/Fear rockets help deal with mactera and grunts. Electric bullets allow Bosco to filter out praetorians, breeders, bulk detonators while you deal with other threats.

It really depends on mission type what can be quickest, but if you had to just pick 1 class for everything - before OCs - I'd pick gunner.

He's well rounded, high combat sustain, reliable damage, bulldog for mactera and has the shield as a panic button (x4 resupplies) among very powerful grenades. Ziplines will get you wherever you need to go too.

You have Bosco in solo to mine quickly, mine up high and provide light. If fossils are too much of a pain, you can just skip them.

After OCs I'd say Driller. Since he's a swarm clearing powerhouse with the capacity to face fight dreads, ignoring thier weakpoints.

I have 220 hours, all solo.

It really depends on the mission and biome. Gunner's good for most but Driller is better for On-Site.

Driller is hard in any biome with strong vertical tendencies but not impossible because the drills are REALLY versatile.

Driller can damage enemies like the Oppressor or Dreadnought from the front with his flamethrower. Gunner can with the coilgun. Both have good "panic button" support items.

Both are crowd control specialists but gunner can be built for single target. Minigun with armor breaking and lots of ammo can solve most if not all problems.

Bosco is your best friend. Use him.

imo, whichever class (or classes) "click" for you the most is the best class to solo with. they all have strengths and tradeoffs, but all of them can cope with basically anything if you're comfortable enough with their tools. even scout; some of the scout players get up to crazy things.
If you have a universal build, then any class. They all have universal builds.

You will get lost, like a lot and there are so many places that are too convoluted to get to so take driller so you can dominate the cave and dig to anywhere you want. Remember your flamethrower shoots through every creature you hit, so try to line them up so you hit at least 2 bugs in one stream so your ammo goes a bit further.
