Point at a resource means someone wants it to get collected, which may also include unspoken instructions such as "place a platform there so the scout can get it".
Point at enemies to alert allies to potential threats, either in general to inform the group of where a threat is coming from, or to request elimination of the threat by whomever has the best tool for the job.
Point at an objective to ask someone nearby to repair it, or gather and move a part like a mini-mule leg, etc.
Point at a mushroom to inform the group that there's a mushroom. Point at gold chunks to let everyone know that you're rich!
And many more! As the saying goes: A ping is worth a thousand words.
The laser pointer is an effective communications tool because all you have to do is ping stuff to indicate "let's do this thing here" or "watch out for this thing" if it's an enemy.
Once you know the mission types and what to do there's little communication necessary. Laser pointer and "ready?" (or r) is enough in the vast majority of missions.
