Is there an option or mod to enable some small audio or video notification for new chat messages?

Got kicked from a mission for the first time because I didn't notice a set of chat messages from the host asking me to put up a zipline, though they weren't pinging a mineral/location for me to aim at which is always my immediate clue to press enter and view chat messages (or generally to stop doing whatever I'm doing and see if anyone needs help). Is there a way to make it more obvious that there are new hand-typed chat messages for me to look at in the corner of my ultrawide screen? If not...why isn't there?

I highly recommend the mod that Chibbity mentioned. Very helpful. Just keep in mind that every time the game gets updated, mods that haven't been updated for that version have to be re-enabled, so you'll need to re-enable the mod every time you start the game. It's not a problem. Just something that you need to remember to do. The only time that's it's sort of a problem is if you've bought a buff beer, because enabling the mods reloads the Space Rig, so you lose any buff you may have had.

In addition to that mod, there are settings in the game for the text chat size and how long it stays on the screen, which can help. There's also a setting to have a sound play, but it's basically inaudible (I've never heard it), which is where the mod comes in.

Just uncheck the box that says "Automatically disable outdated mods."

Good point. I hadn't really thought about it, since it's such a minor thing. And it's probably a good "safety" feature if you have more mods installed.
