How to beat the Caretaker (as a driller)
today i utterly failed vs the caretaker as a driller. although one other team mate did equally bad, i feel i have to improve in the future. dont want to be a hindrance for the team.

its not like i have not beat him before, but either i was carried by my team (playing driller) or played other classes.

so i am seeking honest advice in general, but playing as a driller in this fight especially.

i was digging trenches before the fight, but didnt feel it helped alot - waste of time?

should i be able to use c4 in the armor stage or vs the eye (i failed to do so.

i brought a flamer and subata, but the former felt pretty useless tbh. maybe i try the sludge cannon next time, but it feels bad being forced on a certain weapon.

thanks in advance

If you use flamer with extra range its quite good, keep moving is the key and taking care of his little robot friends.

When caretaker release his bombs just run in a circle around the caretaker until he is done doing so.

You can shoot the tentacles to ease up the bullethell.

C4 with ectra wide explosive range is nice to get his armor done faster.

Use the times between his recovery (after you damage one part of its health) to replenish your ammo with supplies.

Drop supply drops around him not on one place so you can replenish faster. Maybe drop some supply drops behind an obstacle or in a small selfmade tunnel so you do not get attacked by sniper turrets right away.

Its wuite a Marathon, keep running and dont give up sometimes you can hardly attack but time isnt any of your concerns.

As a driller in Sabotage, your job isn't too much to bother about the caretaker but taking out the patrol bots, shredders and tentacles.
Don't play cryo or poop. Fire is your go to, once you set a robot on fire, it's instantly explode regardless of HP left.

Dropping C4 from the roof of the room can be an idea but it's not that great.
Just take the flamer with maximum heat perks and torch the above mentionned menaces.
Tell your team to just stay in an area between two tentacles, that way you can minimize your running around while maximizing the protection to your teammates which can go ham on the Caretaker.

Just a reminder: a single power attack is enough to oneshot a tentacle. I recommend you use one at the start of each phase, considering all tentacles respawn at the same time. It really eases up the fight to not have all 4 tentacles shooting at you each time you finish a damage phase.

if the cave generation allows it, I dig into the roof and lob C4 down on it. I also take a supply drop up there with me too. I dig a tunnel up, which keeps me safe from most stuff the caretaker can fart out, toss a C4 down to kill the vents phase, run (or jump if there's ziplines or platforms handy for it) down and use my flamer set up with the extra reach and fast igniting/direct damage build I forget the numbers for, then when he's invulnerable pooping out the various BS to run away from, I zip my way back up my tunnels in time to C4 again and repeat. I grab a couple more C4 from the resupply up there and repeat. I can't remember the name of the overclock right now without looking in the game but there's one that basically leaves no flames on the ground for bugs to walk into but sets stuff on fire nearly instantly and that really ruins robot mobs as they die instantly when they are ignited. It can reach the eyes without being in range of the tesla coils and it knocks patrol bots and shredders apart.

Also learn fast throw for axes with Q and G to really demolish the eyes until that gets patched

I use a direct damage flame thrower my dude and can do the caretaker with just 1 resupply, not he whole thing just 1 refill, you just gotta aim right at the vents and not waste fuel, and the spawned minions some well aimed subata shots finish them quickly and easily, flame the vents, subata the eye and minions, simple stuff really and as for the tentacles there is no bullet hell like vault traveler said if you keep moving, you dont even need to touch them.

Satchel charges from the ceiling are legit. With a little practice you can dig a route in the time it takes the team to call resupplies and take down the batteries. Drop two, det them. Shields down in literally two seconds. Run back down, resupply, and then fight the eye till the phase pause. Rinse, repeat. It’s a little frantic, but if done correctly it easily cuts the length of the fight in half, if not more.

Axes work good with the eyes, but I prefer to use my time on tentacles and mobs. Randoms get pretty excited when you take those shields down like that, and tend to rush right at the eye, so they need the help.

Alternatively, and I’m not good enough to do it consistently, if you get a good enough cut in the cieing, you’ll be able to shoot tentacles from there. If that happens, call your own resupply up there. No host with half a brain will object when you’re doing literally more than half the damage on your own and saving everyone massive ammo otherwise wasted on shields.

I just thought of it and I’m gonna try it…dig a little further than you normally would and use your first satchel to blow a hole in the cieing…done correctly, you could lob the other charges AND have clear view of the whole room to fight from above…BTW, right now the tentacles won’t come get you up there…

No need to dig to the ceiling - Take the C4’s t1 radius upgrade and you’re golden. Just toss it directly below the “tip” of the caretaker’s pyramid-like form and it should nearly insta kill all 4 vents in solo/duo.

Heavy hitter OC for the EPC will greatly increase the damage done to the eye of the caretaker, I definitely recommend using it if you have it.

Finally, one more tip:
The caretaker’s batteries that you eject directly prior to the fight can be picked up after they land on the ground. They do some solid damage to the vents, but a better strategy is to place them on top of the circular holes that the tentacles come out of, which will obliterate them as soon as they come out. You can start the fight having 2 less tentacles to deal with, meaning one whole side is completely unguarded and you won’t take damage.
Pro-tip: Spamming E when the battery is about to come out will let you catch it as soon as you eject it.

Playing driller is not different than any other class during encounter.
Keep moving to avoid getting hit and shoot targets.
As for the dmg goes, cryo with dmg mods + plasma feels good enough on haz 5. Sure it aint gunner damage but you'll be fine.

Driller here. The care taker fight is a lot different than other machine events. The giant waves cant be blocked, trenches and caves are pointless. I recommend using the plasma pistol and the cryo cannon, just dodge the waves, run up and blast the 4 ports. When you stand on the platform below caretaker you have about 4-5 seconds before electrical discharge occurs. Just blast away for a few seconds, fall back off the platform, allow the electrical discharge to occur, shoot with plasma pistol, after discharge get back on the platform and hit the vents with cryo cannon again. Rinse and repeat.
MrPurple33 Jan 7, 2022 @ 7:14pm
Yeah, Sneakily, all those Electrical Coils are what get me for the most damage, I can dodge the warped in bombs, and even the tentacles well, but if you're right on those Coils when they go off, they can sometimes one blast fry you

The other 3 classes, I would only sometimes be on them to get a better shot at the open red eyes- with Driller I had to risk it way more, to Flamethrow the Vents- it just took some Flaming, jump off, watch for the Coils, repeating to do- took Longer, but doable- I'm also an Old School Driller who uses the HE Grenades- they do nice damage to the Vents as well

I run icestorm cryo most of the time, the added dirrect damage works well enough on the care taker itself, but you have to be willing to get in close and run away when the coils show up and start to charge.

Thanks for the "one power attack" on the arm, that'll come in handy.

Choose Heat tier 2 instead of damage. The key is fast ignition which instantly kills robots and heat at 20 instead of 10 halves the time it takes to combust robots.
