How do I find new areas?
Just started playing and having hard times finding areas of Morkite. Am I correct in assuming that the red/white voxel rock doesn't go anywhere?

New Areas are marked by brown earth, normally in a circular formation.
When using your scanner it will be shown as "compacted dirt" and you should find them quit easily as the look the same no metter what biom and are quit easy to spot.

What do you mean by this? When I press tab on the scanner, I just get a 3d map

He means the laser pointer.

The Scanner can be used to find the beginnings of the tunnels that connect two rooms though.

It's the same as it was there, look for compacted dirt.

The laser pointer on Ctrl,

also you can tell where next caves will be on the terrain scanner, after exploring the current cave, you usually can see a tunnel or another cave on the other side of some compacted dirt, or even a solid wall.

I think I get that but I'm just not seeing any compacted dirt anywhere

You’ll find speckles of regular brown dirt around the areas where it is.

Play Scout, Light up the entire cave x10 times to be sure to see compacted dirt.
now some of the compacted dirt can be under terrain or up near the celling.

as you using CTRL for the Laser Pointer to see a brown color dirt with a name of: "compacted dirt"..

if still not find so use TAB for the terrain scanner Was mentioned above, when you standing in position and moving around the map check where can see a different cave location, some of them tricky indeed, some of them so easy to touch.

good luck, ask for scout or driller to lead you for victory.

To be clear, the terrain scanner does record everything in a sphere around you if walk along the "walls" of the cave, tunnels and other caves behind solid walls appear on the terrain scanner aswell.
