Am I missing something with the smart rifle?
I understand the idea behind it but it just seems too underpowered on a damager per shot to ammo capacity ratio. Like it takes two full clips of 36 (72) to kill a praetorian by shooting its weakspot, with an ammo capacity of 252.

Additionally, you can't single out a single target in a big group, so if you've got a slasher coming for you that you need to kill with others on its tail then I don't see that panning out well.

The way I see this, it needs a big capacity increase (350 max base at least) or a damage buff, because right now not only do I feel that it's underpowered, but the ammo capacity is not sustainable.

it does well at killing most smaller enemies, you prolly could change the build for larger enemies or need to find a mod that helps

That was pretty much the 1st thing i was thinking about when they 1st introduced the weapon. I was instantly afraid that it will be a good group killing weapon, but very bad for single target or bosses.
I hope it will have some hood mods to balance this out.
You have a secondary for a reason, both of which can be built for massive single target damage, so I don't see what the problem in the weapon focusing on crowds is.

Can the smart gun outperform the grenade launcher and plasma cutter at crowd clearing?

More to the point autocannnon with neuro or sticky fuel + sticky flame slowdown beat smart rifle by miles
Smart rifle seems to be short on both ammo and a turret interaction option like the other 2 main weapons.

I'm trying to reserve judgement for the moment.

To be honest.
This smart guns isn't that smart, and not much of a rifle.

I'm saying either more damage or more ammo, one or the other
engineer has very heavy secondaries, so his primaries are a bit underwhelming. i see that as being by design.

Since when stubby and shotgun are underwhelming?
They were always very good, and now, when compared, to dumb rifle they are even better.

Dude I destroy with stuby. Great crowd control and demolishes anything I can get up close too.
Ballance patches are to be expected. I'm still hoping for one of the redundant overclocks to be one that intergrates with the hawk eye system, so turrets target locked on foes with the smart gun, so you can use the smart gun instead of the pointer to aim the turret.

This would makeup for the low ammo as you'd not even really be using it.
There's an overclock that allows the shots to penetrate armor, might help, i find the LOK to be good for shooting mediums or airborne enemies.

I'm wondering how bad you're as engineer to make that statement.
