well, i bought the game, dark future DLC, and the supporter pack, so I paid essentially 60usd for it (45 pounds) - It's the kind of game i can see myself sinking a lot of hours into..

I don't really go by the pound per hour metric either, But I understand why people do.. I used to spend 50 quid on a bag of cocaine and do it in 30 minutes... so yeah

It's because of the cost to make the game.

Deep Rock Galactic is a very light game (2 gb or so), and it doesn't take much resources (mostly manpower, since salary makes up most of the cost) to make.
One of the mods said here (half a year ago) that the development cost is easily over 3 million dollars. It's partly due to the fact that the company is founded in Denmark, one of the countries with the highest GDP per capita, where the development took years.

Well, perhaps it's not a big number compared to AAA games, but it's definitely something among indies... Although I personally think DRG is above indie standards in every single way.

I personally just don't like it because it basically implies the greatest form of video games are F2P. It requires nuances like "hours of fun" where said nuance isn't ever really quantified. It encourages padding in production and encourages customers to drag their game out longer to feel like they're getting value from it. I don't like it as a rule of thumb or deciding factor of whether a game is worth its price.

But to be fair, I also have this conjecture from the point of view that has not bought more than like 3 full price games in the past 5 years. I'm just naturally stingy with my money. It's easier to not really care about whether a game I bought for $20 only went on for 10-15 hours than if I paid $60.
That's a good point. Can't say I'd considered speaking of it that way encouraging the market to focus solely on time spent playing.

If I may ask, what's dumb about that metric as a rule of thumb?
I seek to learn, if I can.

It's because of the cost to make the game.

Deep Rock Galactic is a very light game (2 gb or so), and it doesn't take much resources (mostly manpower, since salary makes up most of the cost) to make. So it relies heavily on the gameplay hour for the player to feel that the game is worth more.

If we're talking about, say, Resident Evil. Sure, you might end up playing for 30 hours or so for $60, but the amount of details that were put into the game is a different story. It is as if you're playing a game and watching a really good film at the same time.
Indeed, that's why you never use a rule of thumb as the only factor.
If you do, you end up saying things like "Well you spent 40 hours so it must have been good" while ignoring everything else.
I take bringing up playtime at all is likely to draw attention to it as the main focus? That is a good reason not to mention it, for sure.

Thank you both for your responses; I think I learned something.

I wouldn't call Deep Rock Galactic pricey; it's $30.
If you like video game mining, dwarves, and horde shooters; you'll find a very nice game that you can have a lot of fun with in DRG. The guns feel great, the digging is satisfying, each class has a distinct toolkit that work really well together without being painful solo.
The soundtrack's great, too.
its 30 dollars. yes thats true but maybe he isint in america or another country that you get paid in euros. for example poland, in poland this game costs 107 zł

Hmm, well I don't know the prices of games in Poland, but I imagine games that would cost someone in the United States $60 are probably in the area of 215 zł then?
...being a different currency, it has a different value; but I'm guessing 107 zł could get you more groceries/rent/whatever than ~$30 could get someone in the U.S.?

the dumb metric of 1 Hour = 1 Monopoly Bux
If I may ask, what's dumb about that metric as a rule of thumb?
I seek to learn, if I can.

Or to put it simply. Quality =/= Quantity.

Imagine getting 10 hours of ps1 graphics and average gameplay, vs 1 hour of splendid graphics and incredibly fun gameplay with a much higher budget. Which do you spend 10 € on? I'm willing to bet most people will be happier to get the latter.
