You have to. You only get a choice of three after machine events.
Otherwise yeah exhaust the drop pool since there are no duplicates.
Also remember that cosmetic cores won't ever drop in a weapon core drop, unless you have all overclocks in the game, and you can target those (2nd stage of DD/EDD completion reward, weekly core hunt) for guaranteed weapon overclocks.
I wonder if there is some method to the madness where playing as class A biases the drops towards class B
It seems when playing driller, the vast majority of drops/rewards are for gunner. Playing as scout, I seem to get engineer based loot.
Obviously this isn't scientific, just an observation I made. I had thought that it was encouragement to play different classes or something.
Also, thank god that there are no duplicate drops...what a relief
there is nothing you can do to influence it
anything that seems like it might be manipulating your odds is pure coincidence - playing X class will not get you more drops for said class
