Steeve Perk (How does it work?)
With almost 500 hours in this game you'd think I'd know this by now, but I promise I'm not (that) stupid. I just don't use this perk very often. Hardly ever in fact. Not that I think it's bad, I just don't like using it personally, but I thought I should try using it more.

I went into a mission, got through part of it and found a slasher. Eventually it died, the cooldown on my conversion was off, but for some reason I couldn't convert another. No matter how much I spammed I couldn't get another. Eventually I managed to get one, but it's left me scratching my head. How exactly does this work?

Was this a fluke or is there an invisible cooldown time for when the previous Steeve dies? (If so I'd like to suggest some sort of secondary cooldown timer as trying to figure out when you can and can't use it in the heat of battle is a problem)

Also any other tips for this would be appreciated (e.g. What kind of grunt should I be using at any given time or does it matter?)

Slasher or Guards are definitely best, a Slasher will probably get more kills, while a Guard will likely last a lot longer. It's probably not worth getting too picky between the 2 and just take whichever you encounter first, unless there's Regenerative Bugs in which case whatever you pick will probably last the whole mission, barring an encounter with a bulk detonator or dreadnought.

It's a great perk. A lot of people don't use it because you often don't see how much heat he takes off the team, he just does his thing. Still useful deep into Haz 5 and EDDs for me. But ya, the cooldown system along with the whole "is he dead or alive" problem is irritating. Sometimes he gets hung up somewhere. The need to change it up so don't assume you're eligible for another one after your HUD shows he's off cooldown.

That's way worse than how I thought it worked. I assumed it was some kind of invisible cooldown which I guess it is, but that's kinda annoying. Very little irritates me more than withholding info from the player, especially stuff like "when can I use my skill again"

Still, I appreciate the insight. I hope me ranting doesn't come off as being upset at you or anyone in particular. I'm just venting at this.

Try using it when going into a mission with regenerative bugs. Anytime he takes damage he just heals it up and you can end up havng the "same" Steve for the whole mission.

Also, don't wanna hi-jack this thread, but has anyone tried to charm a web or acid spitter?

I knew about the regenerative bugs mostly from friends and other players.

As for your question, I'm pretty sure they can't be tamed since they don't count as grunts. I could be wrong on that as again, I've rarely used it, but I've never seen anyone have a tamed spitter.

Web and acid spitters are infact excluded from pet conversion. Had abunch of oddly spawned web spitters lately scurry on the ground to get to a wall and they are immune to any head pat/chin rub conversion techniques.

The only creatures you can tame is grubts, slashers and guards

Are you 100% sure that Steeve died? When this happens to me, it's usually because the team digged a too narrow passage through a dirt wall and he gets left behind.

Beast Master is one of those perks I consider taking and then think "Oh yeah, Steeve drives me up the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wall whenever someone else uses it, I shouldn't". Your mileage will obviously vary.

I don''t use this perk much either because I have other perks I want to use. Steve is a little annoying sometimes as well because he blocks your shot in tunnels at times and I mistake him for an enemy a lot.

But if you are playing solo having Steve and Bosco around make Haz5/EDDs a lot easier.

This is accurate. You cannot tame a new Steeve until the old corpse despawns.

Funny enough, while Steeve's dead corpse lies on the ground, you can still pet it.

Not sure whether that's intended or not, but I do like it haha

Besides that, I for one believe Steeve deserves such pets 'til the end.

Never noticed that the corpse needs to disappear, but if that is the case they should probably change it.

Also, don't know how often I jumped on a slasher thinking Steeve was dead only to find out he's not and then getting almost killed. They should really change the perk icon so it shows whether Steeve is dead or still alive.

I kind of wish they pulled a "Diablo 2" as far as Steeves go, and just put a little character symbol on the HUD to show that A) Steeve still lives (or doesn't) and B) just how much HP Steeve HAS.

While we're at it, is there any way to tell how many Gunner shields / C4 satchels one has left apart from manually counting?

Somehow I've yet to figure that out after 300 hours.
