Are bunkers the new meme?
Today i had 4 instances of bunkering in a pub salvage mission and 2 of them were near defeats and the other 2 complete annihilation when the bulk detonator showed up. i have never seen so much bunkering, usually it happens once a week but now people seem to really be going for them.

am i missing some kind of joke which is too edgy for my old ass to get?

Its this.
Bunkering is a thing only leaf lovers do because they aren't real dwarfs and can't stand pressure.

Not just engie. The driller himself can hold the entire swarm with just Sticky Flame and a few pints of ammo.

The worst is when an engineer puts a platform ceiling above the box on salvage. It's literally better to keep the extra line of sight instead of boxing us in.

you do realize the roof is just an extra level of defense you can stand on, it splits the hordes and eases the pressure on the uplink, it also blocks spitters and mactera , it has a tactical advantage which far surpasses bunkering.

don't get me wrong, i've bunkered under very limited circumstances, if i'm cut off from the team and it's a wave full of macteras or spitters and the cave has high ceiling bunkering is a life saver.

for holding already defensible terrain it's absolutely useless.

You do understand that we got range and roughly 90% of the bugs don't?
So its mainly cover for them, not us. Allowing them to walk over and bite your head.

If you badly want a roof, make at least sure its serval (like 5-10m) above our heads.

Needs to be about 12m above the box so gunners can have ziplines, but really not necessary because spitters just crawl on it and are now closer to you so it is harder to dodge.

I, too, dislike making platform roofs close to the uplink. Unless playing driller, range is pretty crucial not to get eaten, and shooter bugs are sufficiently rare to not really warrant making roofs in most cases.
Engis with repellent additive do not build roofs to stay/walk on. It totally defeats its purpose. If a dwarf stands on a platform with repellent additive the mobs will move on it instead of going around it.
Good engis with that mod do only "fake" roofs to keep the head space above the defense point free of mobs. And they often also lay some platforms around the defense spot to funnel the mobs. Also sometimes they place the platforms aroudn the dropship to keep it clean of mobs for emergency ways and to place supply drops which are clean to reach in emergencies.

And yes placing the platforms high enough above the defense spot so the Gunner can set a zipper exactly so that he can hover within the zone obove the object is the right thing to do.

Dudes are trying to show that we compete in killing bugs and survival.
While someone's having fun, trying to act creative as much as frames of the game allow.

Whilst having no creativity, let the trolls choke on themselves.

Bunkers. Pffffft. Such an elven tactic. Those wannabe dwarves should be ashamed of themselves.

1800 hours i have never once seen a bunker player go "Lets find new and unique ways to defend against the bugs!"

it was always "omg i just got this yesterday why is dis haz 4 sooo hard!" bunker bunker bunker.

Well, sometimes the truth is veiled as you're an exception.
Maybe I'm wrong and there're 0 creative people.
But you should treat them like that, cause you never know.

I've only ever heard of bunkering, not once have I actually seen it. It does sound boring though, like closet camping in left 4 dead.
Nightwolf 9 aug, 2020 @ 15:06
back in the day there was a wave of noobies from a fresh sale came in, every other game was full of them bunkering on high haz's because they were like lvl 10 running a haz 5 and it was the only way for them to survive. after iron will was nerfed, and the oppys were added, and bulks suddenly started magically spawning when a team bunker'd it died off a lot, its pretty rare now a days compared to then.

there's nothing wrong with the tactic, last guy alive, low ammo, too many bugs to handle, its legit to bunker as a last ditch tactic. the problem is noobs are using it as a way to cheat the games combat mechanics, so they can limp along in higher hazard levels instead of learning to play at lower levels and get better.

and thats all the argument boils down to is players who think its fair to limp along that way and players who think its better to learn how to play at lower haz levels until you are ready for higher ones.

I've been running across a lot of people trying to bunker recently. Almost wipes the group every time. One person literally just dug the salvage objectives down in a straight line way too far, then dug a staircase afterwards. Went down from falling into his pit of death. Second objective, it was two vertical C4 holes, which allowed bugs to spawn in the bunker.

Bunkers are meant to compensate for Engineer lack of damage mobility. Anyone who thinks Engineers just run and kite obviously never played the class. There are good bunkers, in which there are escapes. Then there are bad bunkers. There is also a time to bunker. Bad players make bunkers bad. The too heavy can't carry still applies. Anyone who brings up detonators to counter-argument bunkers when there isn't a detonator to spawn clearly just doesn't like bunkers and doesn't understand that bunkering during that time is bad. At that point, a large area is better. Bunkers are equivalent to custom map Castle Defense in Warcraft III (Before blizzard went full re****.)

Basically, don't bunker if players suck at bunkering and can't git gud, suck at defending, explode the bunker, don't have escapes, and typically when enemy has explosive mobs.
