Any tips for finding helmets?
I know they make a sound like the cargo grate, but slower.

Is there any way to know there's one on the map? Are they tied to cargo crates, for example, or more likely to appear in bigger maps?

I believe they are more likely to spawn on longer missions, but I don't think there's anything you can do to force helmets, cargo crates, or machine events to spawn.

Crates and lost packs get a 1/6 chance each regardless of mission length or complexity. It's just plain rng if you'll run into one.

There's one thing you can look for which is a backpack, if you see a backpack on the ground then you can expect to find the helmet somewhere around that backpack's position.

I usually almost trip over them- they make an Identical sound as the 2 Crate Batteries and I always come across them out in the open

Thankfully, I also usually find them early in a mission, or Less than 10 minutes in- the only time I never searched and dug for the extra Loot was a mining mission where I found the Helmet in the Last Cave right at the end- the Purple Square showed up all the way at the Drop Pod start room, and it was a Long Deep Fungus Bog Map- knew the Return Pod wouldn't drop there, so just thought "oh well" and didn't even try to get it - for a skin maybe I would have, pickaxe pieces, not so much

Its still better to go for them because there's materials you can use there which usually consult of the maps minerals.

So they show up on the map right from the start of the mission? is checking my map from time to time a viable strategy then?

No, the helmet requires you to interact with it before it'll reveal anything on the map. Then it'll be a purple plus that you have to dig out.

And I got at at least one of them perched high up on a random ledge in those dark dense biozones... so you really need to explore around.

My luck on finding these things is horrible. I have found maybe 3 or 4 since they were added, and I haven't gotten a single pickaxe part from any of them.

The loot is randomized from it, same with the cargo crate. However there is one thing you can use to know if a helmet is spawned which is if you find a backpack somewhere along the floor. I've noticed that whenever a helmet is spawned there's a backpack that accompanies it somewhere close to it.

Add 3 other friends and then each player makes their own game on a Point Extraction level. Whoever finds the most events (helmet, machine event, cargo crate, etc...) tells the others who then join. Best to use Scout and I don't think the difficulty matters.

go to the space rig, find the employee wardrobe terminal outside the dorms, you can find all your helmets there

Oh I do search them out, and in general try to find and explore as much as I can

It was thankfully, just that one time- the Helmet was found at the very end of a mission, and I wasn't going to spend an extra 10-15 mins to run PAST where the Drop Pod fell to go all the way back to the beginning for some extra mineral pieces and a random pickaxe doo-dad

I never call the drop pod until I've explored the cave fully, sure the Swamp biome makes that hard to see the stuff that's on the floor so the sound is pretty much all I can use there for that area.
