it depends on your purpose.

if you wants to slaughter everything at once, get huge numbers of kills, and are fighting groups of enemies, go AOE

If you're doing Dreadnaughts or want all the kills all the time, go damage and armour breaking.

My first weapon swap is most likely engineer's smg. Is it any good?

Whatever you do, equip the tier 1 ammo bags upgrade.

I did not like it much, i used a bit but returned to the shotgun :/ I found the lack of accuracy to be the biggest problem in the weapon but is usable nonetheless

Really? But the Thunderhead is so good on ammo already, don't think I've ever run out even on Haz 4.

Hmm, maybe you have a good point @Chibbity but from just my "feeling" (not thinking) it just lets you get away with being unusually reckless with your ammo, and really makes you feel "free" to spam away with it to your heart's content. I love this upgrade for enabling that feeling (even though it's a bit "noobish").

Autocannon has a lot of good options - I agree with Chibbity- you can keep the ammo at 440 - It's rare I get Low on ammo, and when I do, someone on the team has usually called for a supply pod before me

you can build for more damage, more shrapnel/AOE, or a mix of both - I personally just went damage, so I can pinpoint shots better, and unload and cover my team with out Fragging them accidentally

the ONE key upgrade is slot 4- Penetrating Rounds- Armor Break +300% - once you have this the Autocannon just plain shreds everything- Praetorians are a breeze, and with Mactera It's Like they're getting hit by an AA Gun

I also highly recommend the slot 5 Supressive Fire/Fear mechanism- Praetorians and swarms of Grunts will flee once you pound them - I now actively wade Forward Into groups of 2-4 Praetorians- they're afraid of ME now

the other two slot 5 upgrades seem good too, but I find Fear really useful, and the other two upgrades activate "at full rate of fire" - what I like about the Autocannon Is you can single shot, do a short burst of 3-5, or really go full out when needed

my actual build is this ---

1- A- Increased Caliber Rounds- Damage
2- B- Improved Gas System- ROF
3- C- High Velocity Rounds- Damage
4- A- Penetrating Rounds- Armor Break
5- B- Suppressive Fire- Fear

which reading It, Tech-wise, means I use Increased Caliber, High Velocity, Penetrating Shells - which is freakin' crazy and awesome - Dang Good Dwarven Weaponry we have at DRG

I personally don't. It breaks up groups, makes AoE less effective if they're spreading out rather than clumping up, but if you're alone without your team then I suppose it makes sense to delay the incoming stream somewhat.
I see you get it. Plus it makes them turn away and shield their weakpoints.

It's not that this form of crowd control is useless but when I am alone and need it I just use grenades, shields or some zipline shenanigans. The fear effect would be a lot more useful to me if it had an off switch.

As said no best uber meta build for it, just what you prefer. I run CACAB, the fear has it's upsides and downsides, but nothing like wading into an incoming swarm watching hordes of warriors and praetorians flee in terror imo. I shall know no fear. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bgi5STRe8E

Against Praetorians at least, even groups of 2-4, the Autocannon will deliver 1/2 or more damage, then cause them to turn and run- exposing the Green Backside for even easier killing - same with 1st stage Dreadnoughts, although they get Angry and still very dangerous in the 2nd stage - this is Haz 2 and 3 btw - I do Haz 4s, but not as often (yes, yes I should do them more) - usually I'm just chilling out with DRG

Yeah but you get the same effect by shooting their backplate off and then sidestepping their vomit animation up some milde elevation. The cannon doesn't really screw around brute forcing their face either.
It's a pro but one I can fully live without.

Personally i LOVE the AOE fear, its really helpful especially when fighting the big green guys, they turn away from you and it makes it great.

Whatever else you pick, give taking both rate of fire upgrades on teirs 2 and 3 a try, B on 2, and A on 3. Firing 50% faster is quite a lot of fun, even if it isn't as efficient or effective.

This is my setup and I LOVE IT. You cleave right through enemies.
