Rather than letting the "leash" dictate when she comes and where she moves when she does come, tell her instead. That'd be my advice, anyway.
It is however a really bad system in my opinion.
We were in a very large cavern really high up, where we had to zipline across to get the ores on the walls (no scout) from the middle platform (where we parked turrets and Molly).
We made platforms and zipped across to grab the ore, only to have molly decide to come and give us a hug, knocking us off the platform.
It really doesn't work well for when you want precision and you plan ahead.
It feels her "leash" is too tight and perhaps it needs extending to leave room for really large caverns or something.
It would suck if we need to leave someone behind to babysit Molly, while the other has to go onto risky ore digging operations, just to ensure Molly doesn't bump us off a ledge, or into trouble.
I agree with this sentiment. When I was playing Solo I thought I could use Molly sort of as a waypoint and I was disappointed to find that wasn't the case.
Personally I would prefer that Molly would only move when you ask it to.
Often I'd point at my feet (press C) and stay there, expecting her to go where I told her to so I can deposit or stand on her to reach higher up mining spots.
*Many times* she used to vanish BELOW the floor or do the opposite...and go upside down on the ceiling where I could not reach her.
I think she'll come after you after 25-30 meters but she's also become quite reactive lately. I ran out of her range to collect ores a loot bug dropped, heard her stand up just as I started running back and she deployed herself again. It was like a funny mechanical "OH ♥♥♥♥ HE SEES" moment.
