Will Half-Life Alyx run on my PC?
Hi guys,
I've been thinking of purchasing a Quest 2 as my entry point for VR. From looking things up I understand that to play Steam games on my Quest 2 requires my PC to be running the actual game, instead of the headset. With that being said, will I be able to run HL:A on my PC?
My specs are the following:
*Windows 10 64 bit operating system
*16GB Ram
*Intel i7 processor
*NVidia GTX 960M
*Native resoution is 1920x1080
I got this laptop back in 2016 and it can run most games. In fact, the only game I've never been able to play in this machine was cyberpunk.
Thanks,
< >

i doubt it.

Gtx 960 in laptops can run vr games, it just depends on the vram amount on how it will run.
If it's 2gb vram then I suspect it won't be worth it, need to be 4gbvram for a decent time.

Edit/ laptop probably needs a cleaning and gpu and cpu repasted, just by knowing the age of the hardware. Also op, what exact i7? I'm suspecting a 6th gen possibly 6700.

Minimum specs as per Alyx Store Page:

Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
OS: Windows 10
Processor: Core i5-7500 / Ryzen 5 1600
Memory: 12 GB RAM
Graphics: GTX 1060 / RX 580 - 6GB VRAM

Your graphics card is on the low side of the minimum so may just manage dependant on VRAM size. You really need a more powerful card to do it justice.

It's too bad it's a laptop because I was going to suggest if you just upgraded the graphics card you might run HL:A with that pretty well, depending what generation/model this particular processor is.

I mean telling me it's an "i7" doesn't really say much because obviously there's a massive difference in performance between a i7 2700K and an i7 10700K.

Depends if he has a thunderbolt jack on that laptop, cause then you can hook up a new gpu.
And those thunderbolts are slick even though they run on x4 lanes, but its a buff x4.

But yea the i7 matters alot. If it was a i7 6700, and he has thunder bolt, I'd suggest a razor core v1 with a rtx 2080. It's a great setup.

Ooh I see.
True, I forgot to check. It's an i7-6700HQ.

What is this thunderbolt jack? What does it look like? A superficial google search led me to thunderbolt hubs which are as expensive as the Quest 2 itself :x

That's too bad. I feel like a kid again in a bad way. When I was younger it would take years for me to play current games because of how bad our PC was.
I have other VR games on my radar though (boneworks, pavlov, elite dangerous, skyrim vr, escape plan, job simulator, beat saber, etc) and I'm hoping this PC will handle them should I need to stream them to my Quest 2... Will it handle them though? Haha

Egpu.
Google razor core egpu on ebay, they range from 50-200$
Then you obviously need to buy a video card for it, pretty much any desktop card like rtx 2080 for 400$-600$

It's your only option besides buying a newer computer.

Edit/Egpus breath new life into laptops with good cpus but lower end video cards.

Buy the Game if you got the Quest 2 and test it out. If youre not happy refund Alyx and you get your Money back (do not play longer than 2 Hours when you want to refund it !!!). Play with the Resolution how high you can set it (same with the Ingame Quality) to have a good Deal between Performance and Quality. I would say you can play it (with restrictions of course) and i would give it a try (before you buy a new PC)

Steam Refunds

You can request a refund for nearly any purchase on Steam—for any reason. Maybe your PC doesn't meet the hardware requirements; maybe you bought a game by mistake; maybe you played the title for an hour and just didn't like it.

It doesn't matter. Valve will, upon request via help.steampowered.com, issue a refund for any reason, if the request is made within the required return period, and, in the case of games, if the title has been played for less than two hours. There are more details below, but even if you fall outside of the refund rules we’ve described, you can ask for a refund anyway and we’ll take a look.

And sure, this Map in this Video is not really a good Compare because the Original Story have way more Detail in it, but again just give it a try and play with the Quality / Resolution Settings. If it`s bad, refund it and keep an eye on the playtime then

With an intigrated GPU :D

oculus is well known as being more intensive than other headsets, depending on your cpu, "Intel i7 processor" doesn't really help, you might be able to hit the 72hz for the quest 2 if you drop the res and settings but for the most part my GTX 1070 has issues at the native res of my cv1 so not too much hope

Quest 2

72 fps is easy to hold. This is at High settings (spoilers prior to 0:20 and past 1:45, so don't watch outside that range if you don't want spoilers!):

I have a video for 90fps as well. It dips a little here and there but nothing that bothered me.
To be honest, the real question is should you run it with lower specs rather than could you.

With sub-sampling being an option, you may find most things do actually run under spec, but obviously the quality can be heavily hit.

Best advice as said above if you already own a headset is to buy it and try it. You should know instantly if it works and if there is no way to reasonably run it, refund.
