Irritating Lag/Stutter Issue on Quest 2
I've recently purchased an quest 2, and thus decided to immediately buy a link cable and purchase Half-Life: Alyx. The game runs smoothly, buttery smooth for a good 5-10 minutes, and then the game gradually starts to stutter, it gets worse and eventually it becomes unplayable over the space of 30-60 seconds. I restart the game and headset and it returns to normal, 5-10 minutes pass and the cycle begins. I don't much like the idea of rebooting the game every time I want to progress to be honest.

I'm almost beyond positive that the issue isn't with the cable or my device, because I've tested the cable on the oculus desktop app and it states it's ok. My laptop has 16gb RAM, a RTX 2070 and and intel i7 processor, I've checked and nvidia even states my device is VR ready through the nvidia experience app. My drivers are up to date, I have no applications running in the background and disabled guardian, I've disabled supersampling, knocked all the settings down, I've set the oculus app and steam VR to run in realtime on task manager, nothing worked.

It's worth noting the issue isn't specific to Half Life: Alyx either, I get it on the link menu and other applications I've tried to run through this method. So I'm beyond trying to figure this out for myself and I'm open for suggestions.

You could try using the Oculus Debug Tool to increase the Encode Bitrate to 500Mbps. I found it slightly improves the experience. I think this just may be a case of Link still being in beta. Hopefully it will improve over time with software updates.

Some people report that using Virtual Desktop to wireless stream to the Quest results in better perf. You mileage may very, but something to look into.
After exhausting every option, I've finally just concluded that the issue is likely to do with my laptop overheating, which I kind of stupidly didn't consider whilst ticking off all my options, with the CPU hitting pretty high temps on VR, the eventual stutters are probably just from the heat building back up after it cools down when I restart the game.

Hi, I have experienced the same problem and have found your post. Did you find any other possible problem that could have coused this?
Like mentioned, I assume it's either the result of my device overheating or the link cable I was using at the time being ineffective. Most of my issues were solved (including the stutters/lag) by buying a laptop cooling stand and using the wireless features.
