HLA worked fine on Quest 1 but laggy on Quest 3S
Hi, I used to own Quest 1 and played HLA without any problems, was smooth. I stopped playing VR for a while, sold the headset years ago. Recently got interested again and bought a Quest 3S, and using the exact same laptop as before (AMD Ryzen 5 3550H w/ Nvidia RTX 2060), but now HLA is a laggy mess with high latency (almost never gets above 50 fps and hovers around 50ms latency). This is using Virtual Desktop wireless, which is what I used before as well. Quest Airlink is about the same performance. I've optimized Geforce control panel settings for the best performance and it seems to make no difference.

What's going on? Why is it performing worse if I have a better headset? Any tips on how to fix would be appreciated.

Are you running at the same resolution? The quest 1 ran games at a much lower resolution than the quest 3, so your laptop may simply not be able to keep up. You may have to manually go in and lower your res.

I would also try a cable link, maybe you are getting wireless interference.

Another thing is check your laptop temps. (like any computer, it could be affected by things from dust build up to things like it may need it actual cooling looked at (re seating fans/new thermal compound etc).

Tried these suggestions from: https://communityforums.atmeta.com/t5/Get-Help/Half-Life-Alyx-buggy-hand-motion-and-suttering/td-p/783891/page/2

NVIDIA Control Panel global parameters:
Low Latency: Enabled
Virtual reality pre-rendered frames set to use the 3d application setting
Refresh rate set to use 3d application setting

Windows 11 settings:
Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling: Enabled

After applying these suggestions, the game runs smooth like it did before. Occasional slowdown when things get complicated but it's a night/day difference.
