- downloaded both SteamVR and Steam Client Beta Versions
- use Oculus Link (wired) instead of Virtual Desktop
- Make sure "Pixels Per Display Pixel Override" (Supersampling) in the Oculus Debug Tool was 0
- disable GeForce Experience InGame Overlay (which caused problems in other games before)
- closed GeForce Experience and GeForce system settings (at least they were gone from the tray)
By the way: anybody here with the same problem has an Oculus headset?
I was on an older version of the steam client or something and got it properly updated and now the game starts. I figured this out, by going to go play csgo and getting some error about the steam client process.

I am running the latest version of Windows 10 pro with these specs:
CPU: Intel Xeon E5 1620 V3
GPU: EVGA SC GTX 1060
16GB DDR4 2400Mhz Ram
500GB Samsung 860 EVO System drive
(I have other drives for storage but i don't see them as relevant Function specs)
I have tried validating the game files and reinstalling the game, but nothing has worked, ive been able to play this game for 28 hours no problem. does anyone know what might be happening?? the only thing ive done lately is try to play some of the new workshop content (which i had since unsubscribed from since i thought that might be the issue, but nothing changed. the game will say its launching, then will just stop and the play option will appear in steam again as if i had never selected play in the first place. i cannot find any solutions or discussions on it. please help.

EDIT: (Solution/Fixes)
So i have two proposed fixes (because i'm not sure which one worked for me)
Fix 1:
Uninstall Half Life Alyx, then navigate to where the game was installed, Steamapps > Common > Half Life Alyx and delete the entire folder there - which is still left over from the game uninstall. then reboot your pc and reinstall the game, it should launch just fine afterwards.
Fix 2:
If the first fix doesn't work, after doing fix 1
- Uninstall Steam & SteamVR, (NOT Half Life Alyx Or any of your games)
Edit: make sure your steamapps folder does not get deleted with the steam uninstall by moving it somewhere else (because apparently this can happen even though I've never seen it before)
reboot your PC, then navigate to where the Half life Alyx is installed, SteamLibrary > Steamapps > Common > Half Life Alyx > Game > Bin > Win64 > HLA.exe
Run the HLA exe without steam installed, and it should boot up the game in debug mode (which is non-vr)
then close the game, reinstall Steam & SteamVR, and make sure to tell steam where your game directories are stored :)
Then launch SteamVR/Half Life Alyx as you normally would. And the game should work.
i have no idea what caused this issue after the workshop update, but i have seen enough people with the problem for it to be incredibly frustrating, especially since i see many many more people who had no sign of this problem whatsoever, which makes the likely-hood of it getting fixed properly pretty low.
