[Solved] Game won't launch / crash
Streaming it with Virtual Desktop to the Quest. Should not be a problem, i already played it for 8 hours with that setup. So it actually doesn't start...not from Desktop, not from Steam VR Home, not from Virtual Desktop Games Tab. I press the "Play" button (green) of steam, it goes to "Cancel" (blue) to "Play" again within 10 seconds. No other Window opening up, no error message.
Tried both: verify game files and fresh install. Still no luck. All other VR games work fine.

Somebody can help?

Solution: Re-Install Steam (secure your games!)

I don't use virtual desktop at all. I run it straight from the Oculus home hub and it seems to work fine when I do that.

So here's what I've found. Any apps that affect your settings like the razer app or GeForce will totally ♥♥♥♥ it up. Since I've disabled those I've not had any problems.

I do not have anything razer installed. Do you mean the GeForce Experience software? Do you suggest uninstalling it or doing something within the software for alyx?

With the advice given earlier, here's what i tried so far to make Alyx launch (and it didn't work):
- downloaded both SteamVR and Steam Client Beta Versions
- use Oculus Link (wired) instead of Virtual Desktop
- Make sure "Pixels Per Display Pixel Override" (Supersampling) in the Oculus Debug Tool was 0
- disable GeForce Experience InGame Overlay (which caused problems in other games before)
- closed GeForce Experience and GeForce system settings (at least they were gone from the tray)

By the way: anybody here with the same problem has an Oculus headset?

So my problem was that the game would load the menu but loading into the game would just keep going back to the main menu. I uninstalled Geforce experience, opted into the beta for both the Steam client and VR app and the same kept happening. I loaded up a quick save and that worked but it wouldn't load up my most recent save. So if you can get into the game like I could, just check an old quick save file first or even just start a new game chapter and see if that works for you. I have yet to try it in Virtual Desktop because I have all sorts of issues with that on its own.

Yeah a few here in the thread with quests and I read a post on reddit where the guy had an index. Though I don't think the headset matters because I can't get the game to launch at all by just clicking on it in my library. If you're having the same problem as the OP check to see if you're getting an access violation minidump inside the alyx folder. That's what I and others are getting.

If you just close out geforce experience launching the game will force you to restart steam saying theres a client update but this happens regardless of if there is an update or not, wtf XD

indeed, minidump files are being created with a timestamp in filename: hlvr_2020_0527_082152_0_accessviolation.mdmp

FIXED IT FOR ME:

I was on an older version of the steam client or something and got it properly updated and now the game starts. I figured this out, by going to go play csgo and getting some error about the steam client process.

I am running the latest version of Windows 10 pro with these specs:

CPU: Intel Xeon E5 1620 V3

GPU: EVGA SC GTX 1060

16GB DDR4 2400Mhz Ram

500GB Samsung 860 EVO System drive

(I have other drives for storage but i don't see them as relevant Function specs)

I have tried validating the game files and reinstalling the game, but nothing has worked, ive been able to play this game for 28 hours no problem. does anyone know what might be happening?? the only thing ive done lately is try to play some of the new workshop content (which i had since unsubscribed from since i thought that might be the issue, but nothing changed. the game will say its launching, then will just stop and the play option will appear in steam again as if i had never selected play in the first place. i cannot find any solutions or discussions on it. please help.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EDIT: (Solution/Fixes)

So i have two proposed fixes (because i'm not sure which one worked for me)

Fix 1:
Uninstall Half Life Alyx, then navigate to where the game was installed, Steamapps > Common > Half Life Alyx and delete the entire folder there - which is still left over from the game uninstall. then reboot your pc and reinstall the game, it should launch just fine afterwards.

Fix 2:
If the first fix doesn't work, after doing fix 1

- Uninstall Steam & SteamVR, (NOT Half Life Alyx Or any of your games)
Edit: make sure your steamapps folder does not get deleted with the steam uninstall by moving it somewhere else (because apparently this can happen even though I've never seen it before)

reboot your PC, then navigate to where the Half life Alyx is installed, SteamLibrary > Steamapps > Common > Half Life Alyx > Game > Bin > Win64 > HLA.exe
Run the HLA exe without steam installed, and it should boot up the game in debug mode (which is non-vr)
then close the game, reinstall Steam & SteamVR, and make sure to tell steam where your game directories are stored :)

Then launch SteamVR/Half Life Alyx as you normally would. And the game should work.

i have no idea what caused this issue after the workshop update, but i have seen enough people with the problem for it to be incredibly frustrating, especially since i see many many more people who had no sign of this problem whatsoever, which makes the likely-hood of it getting fixed properly pretty low.

Were you getting access violation before? I hope so. It would be nice to have some fixes for this.

@Bad interviewer, are you able to start up Counter Strike GO?

huh, I installed it since I don't play it regularly and I got an error "Failed to connect with local Steam Client process!"
