[Solved] Game won't launch / crash
Streaming it with Virtual Desktop to the Quest. Should not be a problem, i already played it for 8 hours with that setup. So it actually doesn't start...not from Desktop, not from Steam VR Home, not from Virtual Desktop Games Tab. I press the "Play" button (green) of steam, it goes to "Cancel" (blue) to "Play" again within 10 seconds. No other Window opening up, no error message.
Tried both: verify game files and fresh install. Still no luck. All other VR games work fine.

Somebody can help?

Solution: Re-Install Steam (secure your games!)

Did you get a fix? I am getting frustrated.
Eiseneuter May 19, 2020 @ 4:04am
Nope, still not running: drivers are up to date, launched almost without any programs in background. Meh.
I am having the same problem, and I tried submitting a support ticket, but when I do that it says, "there was a problem submitting your help request to steam support. please wait a few minutes and try again."

SAME.

I'm also having this problem with my oculus rift. It worked before but now after the workshop update it's not launching anymore.

Here is the answer I received from steam support:

Games do not run after 'Preparing to Launch'

Because you've already attempted the troubleshooting we have available for these issues, we recommend trying the SteamVR and Steam Client betas. The SteamVR team often ships bug fixes and performance tweaks within a beta of the SteamVR tool. If you are having an issue with SteamVR, we recommend opting into the beta to test, as your issue may be fixed in that update. To get access to the SteamVR beta, do the following:
  1. Right click SteamVR in your library
  2. Select properties
  3. Navigate to the beta tab
  4. From the drop down menu, select "beta - SteamVR beta update."
  5. Once closed, SteamVR will close and begin to update.
As for the Steam client beta:
  1. In Steam, click on "Steam" in the upper left, then choose the "Settings" menu. (Preferences on Mac)
  2. On the "Account" tab under "Beta Participation" click the "Change..." button.
  3. Select the desired beta test from the "Beta Participation" drop down list and click "OK".
  4. You will be prompted to restart Steam, please select the "Restart Steam" button.
Please let us know the results and attach a SteamVR system report in your next response. To generate a SteamVR System Report, open the menu and select Create a System Report, then click Save to File in the bottom right. Choose a save location, then browse or drag and drop the file into your ticket. This report contains information we can use to help diagnose your problem.

I will pass this along to the developers and we will continue to monitor for any increases in issues related to this. The developers use a number of community sources to help investigate the frequency and severity of issues like this. These issues are continually being addressed through Steam and game updates for HL: Alyx.

I would encourage you to search for the issue and post about it in one of the more active Steam community hubs, as other users may be experiencing the same thing.

same ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ issue. All my other VR games work just fine but this one stopped working about two days ago. It crashes on startup everytime. Some ♥♥♥♥ about "timeout waiting for mongoose" other times it claims my sensor is disconnected. WTF is going on with this?

Thank you for sharing the support answer. But it didn't work though. Both betas active, but the issue remains, at least for me.

It also didn't work for me but I thought I share it anyway. Can you use the workshop tools / game editor? Because this is also not working for me.

I noticed that a .mdmp file (in "steamapps\common\Half-Life Alyx\game\bin\win64\") is created every time I try to launch the game. I also send this to the steam support. Probably would be good if other users would do the same.

Has anyone sent valve the accessviolation minidump file that (at least for me) is created a split second after hla (tried) to starT?

edit: yes^

I was able to get mine up and running again. I enabled the steam VR beta and steam beta as well as turning off supersampling in the Oculus debug console. Not sure which one did it but it's working now.

I'm getting this issue too. Tried launching from virtual desktop and launching from steam vr before and after a reboot. Not sure what else I can do.
PoopDuJour May 24, 2020 @ 6:10pm
I don't know if it helps but I also had an issue with the razer apps running so I closed all those down and ran alyx straight out of Oculus home.
algodoo May 24, 2020 @ 6:14pm
To my understanding the supersampling option you can change within the quest only applies to quest native apps. I'm also not running any razer applications. Seems like it might be more of an issue on the steam side of things than the quest or virtual desktop. Has anyone tried to run this with a link that had problems with virtual desktop? I'll give that a shot to see if it will work though I can't play it that way.
