Yeah I had read that one but it was not relevant for me, unfortunately.
But! Upon trying your excellent advice (stupid of me to not have done that already) to start Steam via terminal, the game now all of a sudden just worked. Started instantly, no error messages or hiccups whatsoever.
And I have zero idea why.
I'll have to investigate this one further and see if it now also runs outside of being started via the shell (I fully expect it to...!) but this is one weird case. And it's not like the system just needed a reboot after an upgrade or something - I've tried several times over several days.
And the game runs perfectly now, also when Steam is not started from the shell - as I totally expected it to. But WHY? No idea.
But hopefully maybe theoretically someone else can find this thread of interest sometime down the road, should they google it like I did. :)
For now, I've "only" a Fritz! Box 4040 router, 2.4 GHz, but everything works fine, even if I know that a 5 ghz router is the requirement.
But the problem is another: since I bought the headset, I have played in every possible way: via Steam Link wirelessly, via Quest Link wirelessly and via USB 3.0 cable.
I've noticed that the best way, with the best quality/fluidity, is to play via Quest Link and I've done so in the last two gaming sessions, without any problems. At a certain point then, I received this error:
"vriniterror_init_hmdnotfound presence failed error 126".
I tried restarting the PC, connecting the headset via USB cable (I had read this solution from a user who had the same problem), but nothing, the message now appears every time I start the game with these steps: -> launch Quest Link -> Monitor 1 -> Steam -> Half Life Alyx.
What happened?
If you do these passages:
Launch Quest Link -> Monitor 1 -> Steam -> Steam VR -> launch Half Life Alyx
the error message doesn't appear and the game, for now, always work.
Launching directly Half Life Alyx, without before launching Steam VR, makes the error verify.
