Help! HL Alyx NoVR mod - no multi-tool function

So I have installed the latest version (Dec 27th) of Alyx with the NoVR mod as well as the latest launcher (Dec 27th) and everything works perfectly EXCEPT for the multi-tool functions. So when I get to the large hatch by the wrecked trains, I cannot open the hatch with the control panel because pointing at the round red \ white control to open it does nothing. Arrrgh! Why would everything else run perfectly except this important piece...

Why wouldn't this run? Because it's not intended to be played without Steam VR.

You have to drag one of the blue dots with your mouse until you touch the other one while avioding to touch the red ones. The game instructs you to do this, but the instruction disappeares so fast, it is almost impossible to read. Hope that helped!
