I need reassuring (I am scared and pukey)
Hello,

so, let's make this as short and sweet.
I've plays the first Half Life games when I was younger, when they came out.
I also played a bit of VR with the first PSVR and I now own a Quest 3.

I play some games with full motion, like Asguard's Wrath and tried the Vertigo 2 demo. I can play them in short burst, like... 30-40 minutes, and then I physically have to stop.
I'm also not a fan of scary game and scare kinda easy (I screamed in the Vertigo Demo like 5 minutes in..)

So, questions:
1. Does the game save often enough than making 30 minutes session is realistic?
2. How comfortable is it motion sickness wise aka will it make me spray puke?
3. How scary is it actually? I don't like jumpscares in flat games (even tho I played the Dead Space Remake and Alan Wake 2, but has to stop AW2 because it was more tense than fun), so I'm guessing it might flatout kill my in VR.

And I just gonna waste 25$?

Thank you

Hello,

1.) The game saves pretty often. There are multiple checkpoints in a chapter and it also saves if you finish a chapter.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, that you can also create manual saves, like in the other Half Life games.

2.) Half Life Alyx offers multiple movement ways. you can roam free, you can teleport, you can teleport walk. I am also having problems with motion sickness but with the teleport option i can play this game for multiple hours without a problem.
3.) There are maybe one or two jumpscares but thats it. there is one creepy chapter but it is designed pretty well, so it never pushes to far.

Half Life Alyx is one of the best VR games out there. This game was the reason why i bought the valve index and it was worth it (my opinion). Also can´t make anything wrong with a 50% discount.

1) Yeah I think 30 minutes per play session is fine if that's what you want. Probably a lot of people played the game that way because not everyone likes standing up for long periods.

2) I never experienced any motion sickness in HL:A, but then again I've never experienced any motion sickness in any other VR game either except maybe a little bit in Arizona Sunshine. I'd recommend playing a few other VR games first that have a reputation for not causing motion sickness and getting you used to enjoying VR without getting sick like Space Pirate Trainer, Beat Saber, and Pistol Whip. Then after you've played other games like those for a bit, you should have no problem with motion sickness in Half-Life: Alyx, I would think.

3) There was one part of Half-Life: Alyx I would call kinda scary, but in general overall I don't think it's a horror game. If you have played actual horror games like Dead Space or whatever you should have no problem.

Well, I just finished the underground/in the dark section (which I believe is supposed to be the scariest) and it was quite tense, but knowing there isn't any jumpscares really help.
The game is fantastic, it makes every other VR game I've played, including stuff like Asgard's Wrath 2, feel like student projet.
And it kinda makes me wish for a full on Fallout VR game (i think because of the scavenging).

If you are getting motionsickness I would argue that you should stop using the device. Why bruteforce yourself theough an experience which make you want to puke? It makes absolutely no sense.

Because the benefits out way the effort of desensitising. It makes perfect sense and something that took me all of a week to get over 7 years ago when I got my first VR system.

No different to people who get travel sick, desensitise and enjoy travel or be limited to how far you can walk for the rest of your life :steammocking:

How would you feel about headcrabs leaping at your face in VR? That's your answer.

Ahaha yup, it's REALLY tense. Every time there's the toxic ones, I get REALLY nervous, i do NOT like them. But the experience's so good, i always power through

Because your body gets used to it. Getting almost no motion sickness from Alyx atm.
And I was also asking because to get used to it, I have to be able to do short sessions to begin with, 30 minutes always seem good to me. Also, some VR games are just more comfortable than others.

Well you got one thing right, do not brute force!
Seriously, it can make it worse.

Like some others suggested, ensure you play in bursts only to the point you feel comfortable with. Simply take a break and play some more later. The more you do it, the longer you last without motion sickness as you adapt to the feeling.

For some its incredibly quick to adjust, for some a little longer, so stick with it. Just not all in one session.

Giving up would be bad advice.

Did you finish the game as it sounds like you were enjoying it?
