I recommend giving steamlink vr a shot now that its on the meta store. I had some issues with airlink and VD with Alyx but for some reason with steamlink vr I am having little to no issues.

Makes sense Valve would first make sure Half-Life: Alyx of all things works using their Steamlink software on Oculus/Meta.

I'm on Q2 and Steam Link works with No Mans Sky fine, but in HLA I get no sound. Have sound in menus and home, but not in game. Any ideas?

You need to make sure you did not disable the "Steam Streaming Speakers" and "Steam Streaming Microphone" in the Windows Sound settings, as those are used to stream sound to whatever device Steam Link wants to stream to.
Also check what devices are used when you are in the quest 2 Link Application. You can set what sound device will be used, and it should be on "Headset". Once you've set those correctly you might need to restart everything for it to take effect.

no luck with steam link

Why not try without the "Home environment"? You can turn it off somewhere in SteamVR's settings. I forgot if you have to be in VR or not to do this, I suspect both is possible.

i have tried wo the home enviro it never loads unless enviro is present is problem

It should load without the Home environment.

Tried VD (Virtual Desktop)?

How is your WiFi? Maybe it's in a congested area, or shared with many others making the speed low? (That should just be jittery and still work, just throwing out an idea).

Also, if you use VPN turn it off when using VR (I think).

Could be time for a complete re-install as well, but don't do that lightly. At least back up any documents, pictures etc. that you want to keep. But this should be last resort. Most likely there are other things you can try before doing that. Like re-installing VR drivers, Oculus / SteamVR, etc.

What's your main PC specs anyway? (GPU?)

i have reinstalled steam vr and alyx tried it on virtual desktop steam link tried launching from headset and desktop. pc is 10900k 5 gig 4090 gpu evo ssd and 6ge wifi at 2100 mbps off its own router and not shared
Areebob Dec 6, 2023 @ 6:53am
Is your PC wired to the router with ethernet? If not....that's likely the issue right there.
soulofgpl Dec 6, 2023 @ 7:14am
pc is wired directly to router game wont start wired or streaming wireless.play all other steam games with no issues virtual desktop or from occulus app

That's really puzzling!

As a test, how about making a new user for Windows, and install Steam etc. there? Just to see if there's something up with the current Windows user's settings. Otherwise I'm out of ideas atm.

I play HL:A without using any home environment, Oculus or Steam VR. Usually via VD.

i built the box and installed everything fresh about 8 months ago. never had any issues on
last build. i do not want to go by my last resort saying " if all else fails delete it all and reinstall" 2nd windows boot on new drive as a test would be last resort for me . still holding hope someone could point me to a log to look at or do some actual trouble shooting on this but not sure who to ask for help other then posting here .everyone official will point the blame at someone else as usual

Yeah I get that. Btw (I think you got it, but just in case) I didn't mean delete everything in my last post, just to make a new user on the existing Windows (which in theory should be kind of like starting from scratch but without re-installing Windows itself), then log in as that user and install Steam, VR drivers etc and see if it works. If it does, then something's up with your current Windows' user profile / settings / stuff.

So to be clear, HL:A actually works but only when the Steam VR home environment starts? I haven't used the home environment for a long time, but as I recall you can install different environments. Maybe something's funky with the environment you use? Tried switchhing environment? (You probably have, just a thought).

Btw, Windows 10 or 11? (just another tidbit of info that may or may not be useful?) Maybe someone else have better suggestions. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I know it's not a free thing to try out, but Virtual Desktop is how I play any PC-streamed game, and it's been rock solid. it'll launch any prerequisites for a game for you. It's like $20, Meta has a coupon right now to knock 30% off. Very handy piece of software that gives you more control over your streaming, an informative performance overlay, and the developer is incredibly active on Discord.
