have you played the whole game in non-VR?
I see a lot of threads asking and talking about non-VR, but has anyone even played the game in non-VR using any of the mods? If so, how was your experience?

Played through the whole thing with the noVR script, ran spectacularly well on my GTX 1650, with no performance issues. The script's default keyboard controls are similar to HL2's control scheme, which makes it easy for both old players and newcomers to the series to play. There's a few spots where you can interact with objects and it'll play the animation again (for example at the distillery, there's a ladder that you're supposed to grab and drag down in VR, in flat mode you can press E and it'll animate falling down, but you can press E again and the animation will replay. It's a small quirk that could be fixed, I suppose, but nothing major. The player does have some weird collision issues with the dynamic objects around, for example I can pass through boxes, barrels, crates as if I was no-clipping through them. It's probably inherited from VR, where the developers had to allow the player to pass through anything.

Overall, it's a solid experience that isn't very far from the VR mode, it has its quirks, but it's absolutely playable and you can finish the game with it.

Nice, sounds like it's a lot more playable that I thought. How about infinite ammo? Doesn't that detract from the experience a bit?

There's no infinite ammo, unless you type in console commands.

Played through twice with the non-VR script. It was already a few weeks ago so I guess the experience will be even better now, the author really works fast (I'm at the discord so I can see that). It works pretty well. No significant problems except for getting stuck on level geometry etc. sometimes. When I played there was still a lot of missing things like the electricity puzzles, but the author is working on adding that.

I played on Linux in Proton (the native version technically works, but I had problems with it, so I went with Proton) and on my R5 5600+RX 6650 XT, the performance was flawless - rock solid 120 fps with only an occasional micro-stutter (I assume for shader compilation because those only happened when entering the scene for the first time, next time it was smooth).

Happy to hear the non-VR version is enjoyable too. Makes me wonder why so many people complain about it being a VR game if the non-VR mod is this good.

Hopefully any follow ups with give us the option to choose between VR or not in video options.

I just finished the non vr version of the game. Everything worked good for me. The only thing that frustrated me a bit is that you needed to jump over the smallest things because walking over it was impossible. But this issue was not big enough to not let me enjoy the game in non vr.

I have finished to the end with the No VR mod. Got confusing (for me) in places because of not knowing the keyboard command for doing something. Web references had them but some were a bit hard to find/or figure out. Played flawlessly start to finish. Got a 'leg up' on gameplay nearing the end when I discovered the 'V' key. Starting a new run thru this time with developer commentary turned on, should be interesting - again, here we go - trying to figure out how to put the friggen headphones on to hear the commentary. Let's google again!!

PS a shout out to the guys who created the No VR mod - awesome work!
Thanks go out to ya 👍

just finished recently, was good, no regrets for not playing in vr. the next release of the no vr mod is supposed to have a player model, so hands and arms and later vr weapon models are being added.

I played the whole game with no vr because I have no vr headset, was thirsty for half-life 3 and not just crappy indie mods, and I gotta say: It was fun. It was definitly my least favorite half-life game, but I really like every game anyway so this was still good. There are not as many fights as half-life 2, but the ones that exist are still very fun. There are also a lot of exploration and interaction aspects of the game where you go "Huh, this is cool, but I can obviously tell this was optimized and designed for vr"

In short, good game if you just want to play more half-life, but if you are looking for a quality life changing super amazing aaa game, you should pass on the no vr mod.

I played it with the Non VR mod for interest and stopped after 30 minutes. It is not only badly implemented the mod, much worse I find that the feeling comes over not a bit. I don't recommend anyone to use the Non VR mod, but to buy a pair of glasses and play it the right way. I also do not understand how you want to play such games without VR because VR glasses are now affordable.

Exactly this. It's entirely each individuals choice and I respect that. However if you use the mod, whilst you will play a HL game you will definitely not experience Alyx as it was intended to be experienced ... and it's really that which elevates it to something special.

100% agree

And to give another tip for those who don't have the money to buy glasses fullprice there is always the option to borrow them for one, two or three months for little money. The longer you borrow them, the lower the monthly rate will logically be.

If it really depends on the money, borrowing is the best option because you always get together the money you have to pay per month in my opinion and especially for newcomers it has the advantage to get a taste of VR without spending a lot of money

@To
play it in VR , you will have a way better experience

You can play Resident Evil Series on Desktop too as Example, but play this Series in VR (the VR Mods) and you know what i mean. VR is "expensive" for sure, but there are as said alternatives where you can enjoy VR with little money per month. Money is not an argument for me when it comes to VR.

And just because there are enhusiasts who invest 1000, 2000 or more money in VR doesn't mean that you have to buy this equipment. There are good and much cheaper alternatives. You can have a great Experience with an old Rift V1 or Rift S or an used Quest / Quest 2, but at least better than playing it on the desktop

No more Words to say ^^ (Spielzeit = Playtime nearly 2000 hrs) . I have played all available Workshopmods too until today just in VR and it was a great Experience. And especially with the workshopmods you miss a lot because sometimes the mods are way better than the main game

Anyways , your Choice @ TO
