It's working surprisingly well. I picked up HLA a while back when it was 50% off, just waiting for the day when a working NOVR mod was released. I didn't buy a VR system, especially since in the 3 years since HLA was released it's turned out to be the only VR game that has any amount of mainstream popularity. VR and the 'Metaverse' has ended up being a niche hobby, sort of like 3D TV. It is a superior experience, but it's not catching on.
It's great to hear that the mod works well but whilst I agree that VR is enjoyed by a minority of the overall gaming population it is still an incredible experience. There is undoubtedly a lack of top quality games due to the reluctance of the big AAA publishers/developers to engage with a niche market, however there are many Indie VR games that are most definitely worth playing along with some VR ports of older AAA games. I've never regretted my investment in VR back in 2016 but accept it's expensive still for a lot of people.
Alyx in VR is an awesome experience and whilst I'm happy to see people be able to play it on a flat screen it can in no way represent the experience you'd get playing it in VR. The two experiences are quite literally a world apart.
Popularity != good
There are so many good VR games. (Though a huge shortage of AAA)
And due to algorithms, someone who doesn't have VR, won't look for VR and therefore will not be advertised it so much. Not without high budget marketing behind it.
Which is why everyone has heard of the "metaverse" a very incomplete and low effort side to VR pushed by FB themselves which is annoyingly used as peoples gauge on how VR is doing. But not much else other than something big news like an actual new half life game.
Sadly, a lot of peoples first experience of Alyx will be sullied too. They probably won't even know it either as VR is a whole different experience.
Not that i don't appreciate the mod. It could help with later playthroughs and messing about. But yeah, ruining that first run by using it, I would advise against it.
I'm sure a VR player is getting a MUCH better experience than I am with a NOVR mod. But I, like millions of Steam players, am a half-Life fan who is not going to buy a VR rig for just one game. I know there are other games out there, but frankly their popularity is minuscule. Alyx is arguably the only VR game the majority of non VR players are remotely familiar with.
I'm happy VR players got a superior experience, but some of the proselytizing and gatekeeping of certain VR owners is oft-putting to mod users. This forum isn't a hardware forum, it's for all players of HLA. I appreciate that the responses so far have been helpful and not demeaning.
I appreciate the advice, but truthfully, it's either this or nothing. I'd rather experience the game on a lesser level than not play it at all. As fun as VR gaming appears, it still hasn't broken through to the mainstream enough to compel me to join it.
That's fair comment. Not everyone wants to be an early adopter. Hope you enjoy the game.
I would rather the concept of just bringing motion games and controls to PC rather than wearing that stupid box on my face.
