When you say you tried the settings in the NVIDIA control panel did you try selecting the game from the programs menu and selecting your GPU as the preferred device? Also make sure your GPU drivers are upto date. Even if its a new lap top it does not mean its running the newest drivers. If you do update the drivers i would recommend using a program called DDU. Its free and it will completely remove your old drivers.
Also this can happen if you are playing while you laptop is on battery.
I don’t think you can choose graphics card output in the VR software, it’s either in the driver software or BIOS.
On Alienware laptops FN+F7 or FN+F5 should switch between the graphics cards, you might have to restart the computer after the change.
Another option is to see in BIOS if the 3080 is detected and enabled.
I have set the right GPU setting in the NVIDIA control panel for the game and in the new Win 11 section. I think the BIOS is the next logical step for me to look into as the FN F5 / FN F7 doesn't seem to do anything in Win 11 with the Alienware. Wish I'd gone back to an MSI rather than the Dell route.... oh well, you live and learn. Even if I can't play half-life Alyx I can just go back to Dwarf Fortress... at least that will run :)
Thanks for everyone's help and any further advice would be welcome, but please try to be nice to each other, the world is going to s**t, we could at least try and be kind. But maybe that is my ignorance as a Gen Xer.
Also HLA is weird and has issues. If you go to reddit HLA you will see a lot of people commenting about it. One of the things I read was that the game was designed with blink in mind, and the free movement style was added later but doesn't work well with the source engine, allegedly.
Pay no mind to people that reference Userbenchmark (a disgraced meme site) and brag about what they own as an entitlement to being correct.
After many many tweaks, I had the best performance on Alyx and Fallout4VR when running Oculus Killer. https://github.com/LibreQuest/OculusKiller
This is helpful, thank you! I'm hoping that this might allow Steam to recognize the GPU rather than the iGPU. Does it permanently stop you being able to run oculus games though? Or is it just a case of running different apps to launch the oculus?
The mod will disable dash so you wont be able to launch Oculus game temporarily. There's also some VR games on steam that would not launch if you dont force OpenVR.
To switch back and forth from Oculus Dash to Oculus Killer forcing SteamVR there is a nice GUI tool called Oculus VR Dash Manager, it also allows you to shut the oculus services down or restart them, something you'll have to do to switch.

Fantastic, thanks for this. I will look into it. Do you happen to know how to check if the oculus software is using the iGPU or dedicated GPU?
You can check VRAM usage by process with Task Manager on Windows. Shortcut is ctrl+shift+esc. You can right click to display columns for dedicated VRAM used or shared V+RAM used.
Uselly vive og, valve index work great on alienware laptops.
Both my 2016 alienware 17 r4 and 2022 alienware 17x Rev1 work decent.
Though major difference is the cpu, ones a 6820 intel. and my new one is 11980 intel.
I do have a rift, but I don't really use it.
I'm suspecting it's ether to do with cpu, bios, or the headset.
