Stuttering and drops RTX 3060 ti
Hi everyone i'm often getting stuttering / fps drops for like "no apparent reasons" since when I die and reload the save the stutter is gone until a good amount of time.
I have rtx 3060 ti, a ryzen 5 2600 and 16gb of ram and I'm playing on an oculus quest 2 at 1x resolution and auto in steam.
Do you guys have any clues what could be causing this ?
Thanks in advance for your answers

My i7 6700 works fine since installation in 2016. :)
The virtual memory is set to 15GB.
How does your crash happen, do you use the HTC vive og? Does flickering happen when the crash occurs?
Iren!cus 16 DIC 2022 a las 11:43
I use the HP Reverb G2. There are no preceding warnings or obvious triggers. The game runs smoothly, no flicker, no loading screen near by, no change of the type of area, no excessiv physical object count, no accumulation of enemies.

I just walk through an area and suddenly the display freezes, some seconds later it turns to black and then the pc announces the disconnection of the headset. The screen displays
the message "Steam VR closed unintentionally". After acknowledging the message some seconds later windows mixed reality reinitiallizes the headset automaticly.

The only constant is the elapsed time of approximitly 10 minutes gameplay time.

I can only report some errors right from the start direct from the beginning after loading HL:A: all is lagging, stuttering, the controllers/hand are flickering.
After a restart of Steam VR this is gone. But this only happens in HL:A, too.
Never seen this in Windows Mixed Reality Area, Steam VR Area or other VR Games.

I think the only issue I've seen with the g2 was link cable.
Though I don't play with those often at all, I mostly touch vive, valve, and quest. What we need to do next is you run the game, and you watch the task manager, and we see if alyx is jumping up in ram, I'm thinking this might be a issue between the G2 and Steam. May need to do some driver uninstalling and reinstalling.
I know the vive ogs can suffer towards last levels causing a flickering until restarted, index doesn't seem to suffer that issue but instead index controllers staying on the ground.
Uselly issue is with driver settings. I uselly stay in steam vr beta for this reason.
What's your refresh rate you use? I uselly stick to 90 for my system and 144hz for beat saber, different games require different settings. though I think g2 can do 60, I wouldn't recommend 60.

Also what is the speed of your ram you useing ddr4 or drr3, hopefully it's drr4 2133mhz, most optimised for the 6700.

I've played HL:A with the 1st gen HP WMR headset without issues on a poor machine (FX:8350 GTX 970 16GB RAM), if it's indeed the headset or the WMR software the issue, it was an update that messed it up.

Personally, what I would do is reinstall SteamVR, the WMR software, the WMR link software on Steam and HL:A.
Iren!cus 16 DIC 2022 a las 13:50
Yes, its DDR4 with 2133MHz. The refreshrate of WMR is set to 90Hz. I have never changed the refreshrate for all VR Games. All settings in HL:A are set to low.

I updated the nvidia driver to the actual version and I would say the problem occurance increases. Before the update sessions had sometimes a duration of 20 to 30 minutes before crash. Now with the actual nvidia driver I not overcome 10 minutes in HL:A any more.

Try this then, instead of ddu, use revo Uninstaller, it will make it like you never installed a driver, removes all files and regedit files.
When useing it, make sure to not skip by selecting all files to delete, it'd super easy to do, and you have to do this twice.
Then reinstall latest driver.

Would make things easier if you knew someone with extra headsets like vive and index, so you can do extra testing.
Probably should also uninstall alyx the same way as well. As you say only its affected, so it could have corrupt files. Also recommend trying steam vr beta to top it off.
Iren!cus 17 DIC 2022 a las 2:49
Unfortunately i have no other headsets available to test.
I uninstalled and reinstalled the display driver and HL:A with no change.
Setting Steam VR to Beta triggers no download. I would say the latest beta is identical to the public version.

Just for a curious thought i started a new game after all changes. 40 minutes without any issue..... In a few days we will see if its luck, a broken save game or poorly optimized late game levels. :P

Possibly game got corrupted and the save file would put corrupted files back into your newly installed game.
Cause save goes to cloud, and this has happened to me a couple of times, skyrim included.
You can add me to your friends list if you want, since I work on computers and VR equipment alot.

Hopefully you probably figured out the very last issue. I know towards the end can be stressful on equipment.

Chapter 2 to Chapter 5 in 3h in a row without any crash or issue passing several spots where the first savegame had crashed...interesting.
It might be imagination but the fans seems to produce lesser noise, too. :P

3060ti and r5 2600X here. For most part into act 11 just few crashes but now I am here and had 5 freezes in 15 mins. Oculus Quest 2 with VD - on link cable or AIR link the same. I have 16 GB RAM and 16 GB virtual memory on partition where I have installed HL: A. HWI said I had 80% of GPU usage and 85% CPU. Task manager said I had 15,2/15,9GB RAM usage. When it freezes I can hear game works correctly but I see shaking video without option to go into menu in game. No problems with Boneworks, heavly modded SkyrimVR or Asgard's Wrath.

That ram useage, is it the alyx app taking all of it, start it up and watch the apps in in task manager and confirm that it is eating the ram.
Windows news and interests took me out one time eating my ram only when I played alyx.

Your not trying to full blast the game while playing it correct? Also make sure you don't have antilansing 16x in your nividia control panel.

If you followed the tread, you may need to reinstall your headset drivers, alyx game, video drivers.
Heck your save may be corrupted.

But first see what's eating the ram and confirm it's alyx.

The game is unplayable. literally can't stop having problems with Alyx, every other game works. You can be walking about with 90 fps constantly no problem what-so-ever, switch your weapon in game then be met with horrible 40-30fps for NO REASON. Updates to this game seem abandoned so I guess there is no fix, looked all around Reddit, Steam discussions and found nothing. trying literally everything; to setting video fidelity to low, to setting resolution to lowest, disabling ASW, to typing in these launch presets BRINGS NO RESULTS.

I can't even get a refund due the amount of time I tried fixing this game, valve plz fix

HL:A seems to store alot of information in the savegame which normally shouldn't be stored there.
Just look at the mod support for example. This is my very first steam game where mod activation need a new savegame?! (except full overhauls)
My performance issue is gone only with a fresh savegame after fiddleling at all the typical graphics stuff.
It looks like they store informations in a savegame which have literally no dependency to the game progress.

Yup, I prefer to play VR games after restart my PC so I have open Steam, SteamVR, VD app and HL: A (+needed apps like MSI Afterburner or monitor driver). Now without play I can see I have 3,9/15,9 RAM usage. In game now I hit all options at low but still have over 15GB RAM usage. Nearly did Win 10 refresh, clean istall ALL drivers, game's file verify. I hope I will not have to use hard reset on my Quest because first configuration was very problematic - it is very first version of that headset. I tested in other games and only had a problem with Boneworks at the end of the game but that's AIRlink's fault, after switching to VD, not a single problem. Unfortunately, it didn't work for Alyx.
