I doubt there are 4Gb gfx cards out there that could run HL-Alyx in VR without issues.

My older Alienware m17x rev 2 couldn't play call of duty black ops 3.

I had 4gb ram, so I upgraded to 8gb, still couldn't run it.
So I upgraded to 12gb 1x4gb 1x8gb, still could not run it, so I did 2x8gb sticks and then I could finally run black ops 3.
Mind you I had crossfire ATI 5870's.
Old tech but it helps point out that more ram is needed nowadays.

Another good one is a Inspiron G3, that was upgraded to 32gb ram.
Has a gtx 1060 gmax.
Friend was playing csgo, then turned on Minecraft with high Res textures while playing csgo, instantly started useing 31gb of the 32gb ram.
Times of changed, heck intel just released the new optane 512gb ram stick, and pci5 is about to wipe out the new pci4.

Times change.

I know all of the office machines at my work only have 4gb, which is woefully inadequate even for just standard office, email, and internet use. Windows 10 alone will use pretty much all of the system ram so everything goes onto the page file and that is slower than ♥♥♥♥.

16 gigs seems to be the norm nowdays... and now Alyx needs 12 gigs we are geting close to need more ram... whoohoo ram cost will be even cheaper... not a bad thing....

And thats the minimum.... not the recomended specs lol.... They dont tell how big of a Hard disk space you need too....

The minimum specs aren't terribly high though really, you clearly arent going to play on a turbo potato but ryzen 1600 and and a 1060 or rx 580 aren't like super computer parts either.

Hell i am on a 980 OC.... i dont even meet the minimum they state... *cry*
but i am waiting... ull see ill kick some major Alyx ass later on... Like ppl kicking ass right now... like you said you gota pull the trigger at some point... i am patient... i want my rig to last at lease 10 years... gess it cant right now but still ill give it to my mom she can play cards on it in 2 years... lol.. ;)

A 980 would at least meet the minimum and actually be a little bit above the minimum. 980 = 1070 = 2060 roughly. The newer generation will always be a little better from a variety of things but the 980 still has a lot of horse power and raw displacement, to make a car metaphor.

You're right though, minimum isn't ideal, but at least the bar to entry is relatively low. That's like a mid range 1080p machine. You don't need a 4k capable beast to play, though it will probably look better.
