So is this a retcon or non-canon or what?
We pretty much know the Combine don't build the citadels on-world. It's been stated before that they basically play lawn darts and drop them from orbit by warping them in.

The fact that for the past 13 years all i thought a new half life game was going to be predictable with "Go with Alyx to the Borealis, stop the combine"

I'm glad they jumped out with half life Alyx and left it on a kind of cliff hanger that half life 1 and 2 alike had.

Now i don't know if the next goal in the next game will be to go to Borealis or something else like rescue Alyx, completely fixed my issues with episode 2's ending of just always kinda knowing where it was going.
By 'new half-life game' what do you mean exactly? going to the Borealis was basically what EP3 was going to be, but the thing that people seem to get confused on is that HL3 would have been a new fresh start, Laidlaw specifically stated when he was at valve that EP3 would have closed the Combine, City 17, Alyx, Gordon and Gman arc, and HL3 would have been handed down to the next generation of team workers to tackle and make something new like HL1 all over again more or less.

HL3 wouldn't have just the Borealis and it wouldn't just involve the Combine conflict, if you look at the Breengrub related stuff, E.g. The Shu,ulathoi hatching into different entities, the Combine transferring life forms to host bodies and copying their consciousness, friendly non hostile Shu,ulathoi.

There really is a lot more a HL3 could involve and it would go so much deeper than the Aperture Science research vessel, the ship itself would just be a piece of the story, but you could use the Borealis as a way to explore other worlds and realities and expand the environments.

I mean there are endless possibilities, a HL3 definitely wouldn't be a simple predictable episode, it would probably even go beyond Earth itself, imagine going to the Combine homeworld?
