Over 21gb of vram used?
Is this normal? I'm still new to VR and when I run alyx via steamvr and oculus link I had gpuz logging in the background and it showed a total of 21.5gb of vram usage (15gb of system memory usage, I have 32gb). I have a 3090 with 24gb memory but I've never seen anything getting close to even half of that before. I have everything cranked as high as it will go but still seems very excessive.

interesting! Do you have any performance issues? How is the overall game play for you? I am on a 1070ti and i occasionally get intermittent stutters. My specs are R9 5900x, 32 GB RAM, 1070ti. My headset is the Index. I will test with GPU-Z and see what numbers i get!

No performance issues that I have noticed.
I'm running a 5950x cpu

my 1070ti has 8GB VRAM and I saw in various areas (chapters 1 and 2), it bounced from 6GB to 7.2 GB of the 8GB usage. Since you have a highter VRAM card, perhaps the game uses more?

Seems like a well optimized game. All game should do this. That is going to massively reduce stutter and load time. There are zero pros to having empty VRAM.

I did not think anything used that much vram outside of like 8k or higher video editing. Well if it can use that memory then I'm all for it. This game must have some mad high quality textures and a lot of them.

I have also a 3090 and 32GB Ram. In which Part do you get this high Utilization ? From the Beginning ? I could do a counter test

I did the end of arms race, jeff and a bit of captivity when I had gpuz running. I'm doing a bit of a speedrun to get the gnome achievement.

- I use Adaptive VR Superr Samling (VRSS)
- Ingame Ultra High Quality
- SteamVR 150% (3892x3792)

And i stream over the same PC in nearly 1080p ( i have no StreamingPC)

Maybe it is just gpuz reporting incorrectly, I'll check with another program when I have time. I'm not noticing any problems in game or other games so doesn't really matter anyway just interesting to see.

Could be, yes. just give it a try with another Program

https://store.steampowered.com/app/966610/FPS_Monitor__hardware_ingame__desktop_overlays/ (i use this for Benchmarks and for sure as an Overlay sometimes). In my Opinion better than MSI Afterburner or something like that (because you can design and embed it the way you want (you can make your own overlay with it)

And how you can see also on 150% no Issues at all and Adaptive SuperSampling (Nvidia Driver Setting). In my Opinion Alyx runs great for this High Resolution ( I got the Reverb G2 currently).

Hope i could help you so you could compare a bit. I delete this Video, because i do not save VOD`s on my Channel. And I mostly reached the 90 FPS (90Hz) despite the high resolution. The FPS only drops slightly during fast movements, but that is not noticeable in the game and normal at this Resolution. Between 150 and 200% i see not really a big Difference, therefore i play on 150% with saved Headroom in all VR Games.

So I played for awhile with afterburner logging and it did hit 20gb for a bit but avarage was about 14gb. Just before exiting the game I checked and it was at 9gb usage (first room after going up the teleporter to the vault). fps is locked to 72 for me as I have not done any of the magic to unlock the framerate on the quest 2.

Looking at the usage graph it seems the memory usage reset to around 7gb each loading zone then gradually went up the longer I played in that map.

I would say working as intended.

sounds good , yes ..but
The Quest 2 shipped last year with just a 72Hz refresh rate — the same as the original Quest model. Since then, it's received multiple software updates that add in support for higher refresh rates. First it was 90Hz, and now there's experimental support for 120Hz as well.
Make sure you have the latest FirmwareUpdates for your Quest 2 , than you can play on 90 or experimental 120 Hz ;), just as a tip

How to Update Quest and Quest 2

In your headset, bring up the Quest menu by pressing the Oculus button on your right controller. Find the Settings section (gear icon).
On the left of the Settings section select ‘About’ at the bottom of the list
Look next to the ‘Software Update’ label to see if a new version is available
Check the ‘Version’ label to see which version is currently installed

I do have 120hz experimental ticked but it only seems to work with native applications without the use of something like sidequest from what I've quickly read. I have now finished alyx 100% so figured I would start tinkering with settings and such. VR is so much fun but still a bit fiddly to get everything just right :)

That's right :D . But hey, you're not the only one who needed some time to adjust his VR goggles and Settings properly. Most have been through that, including me ^^ (I've been through several glasses :D )

And one thing I can tell you as a beginner is that there will never be a "good". I started with the Rift S and thought Whuhuuuuuuuuuu, then came the Valve Index, the HTC Vive and now I have the Reverb G2 since November last Year (and wait for the next generations like Valve Index 2, Reverb G3 , Quest 3, Decagear and so on).

What I'm saying is, enjoy the moment with your current Goggles and if you want go with the technology keep going. And you have to remember that Vr is still in its infancy. But if you look back a few years, many things have already become much better and, above all, more user-friendly.

For you it is currently just all new and unfamiliar, but you will quickly see through it and will also quickly realize what demands you have on VR like Fingertracking, Lighthouse Tracking, InsideOut Goggles sufficient ? , Threadmills, Gunstocks, Handtracking and so on ^^ ;). Find your way you like it. In my eyes, there is no good or bad. It only depends on what demands you yourself have on VR (and above all what you want to invest for it, since VR is not exactly "cheap which you can see very well in the fact that VR hasn't really caught on yet, but it gets better and more and more get the taste worldwide.

I played in a VR Arkademie for the first time on the HTC Vive (15€ for 30 minutes of play). And since that day I just enjoy being in the middle of it instead of just being there :D

If VR becomes more popular, then game developers will also follow suit and develop/port more games. Currently, the market is simply too small to put a lot of money into TOP VR Games.

Anyway have fun with your quest 2
