Constant stuttering on rift S
Hi, After completing the half life alyx campaign on launch I have recently returned to it to play some modded maps and found that every few second my game stutters.
PC specs:

rtx 2060
i3 8100
16gb ram

After analysing my performance I found that (according to MSI afterburner) that I was running on a constant 60 fps, not maxing out my cpu or gpu.

Using rift S and tried lower settings to no effect.
Please help

60fps is super low for VR. Rift S should be running at 80fps. Also it's recommended not to OC your GPU for this game if you are using afterburner for that as well. Default settings work best.

I just use after burner for the stats, so my gpu is not overclocked. My original playthrough was with a 1050 ti, so im used to slightly low fps. Its the constant stuttering that really bugs me though and makes HLA boarder line uplayable

You mentioned that you are playing workshop maps. Are you basing this on just those? If so workshop maps performance are completely dependent on how the map was designed by the creator. The Goldeneye Facility map for example ran so bad that my game almost crashed (RTX 2070S) until Eagle One fixed it.

Otherwise who knows, could be the recent Windows hardware GPU scheduling which has caused plenty of issues for people (why I refuse to enable Windows Updates until this is fixed), could be drivers or some other PC related issue.

Could be the game too I guess, but it runs perfectly for me and same for a lot of people leaving reviews in the past few months so it seems unlikely that game issue would only present itself to a handful of people instead of across the board.

Good luck.

thanks! I think ill probably upgrade my cpu sometime soon and hope that that fixes things.

Didn't read any of this thread, just wanted to point out that you should consider upgrading your cpu. With such a powerful gpu, your cpu can't keep up with it and you ultimately end up restricting your gpu using it's full potentional. I can run this game at 100fps with gtx 970, Intel i5-6600k and 8GB ram.

They apparently played the game on launch and ran it just fine and are only recently experiencing stutter. I'm in the same boat, with a 1070 and a Ryzen 5 3600 + 16 GB ram. Constant stutter and framedrops.

I heard that all Oculus devices have had troubles like this recently, apparently it had something to do with SteamVR having issues with Oculus. Steam might fix it soon but we’ll have to wait and see. I think there’s a guide explaining how to temporarily solve it somewhere on Steam

I have a Rift S, the game has ran perfect for me since day one.

If you find that guide then please share it with me here ASAP. I'm in the middle of a new HL:A run and it's been running like absolute crap for most of the time and it's infuriating and now I've had enough.

I've tried everything under the sun: reinstalling the game and Steam, reformatting PC, reinstalling GPU drivers, turning up fan speeds, lowering all settings to the absolutely lowest, using a handful of strange launch option settings I found online that supposedly fix the issue (they don't), turning off all possible overlays, closing all background apps, overclocking (causes crashes), making sure no supersampling is turned on anywhere, turning on and off beta version of SteamVR and the Oculus client, tinking with Nvidia Control Panel... nothing works. I'm seriously at the point now where I'm about to install a pirated version of the game at various updates (1.0-1.2-1.4) to see if there might actually be a problem with the 1.4.1 update. I'm so hyperfocused on fixing this right now, it's consuming me lol. I refuse to accept that I bought into VR for a broken game.

For me the stutters began after Valve released a patch for the game on may 15 (or something like that). The one that fixed 'jittery hands' issue. After that, the game stutters during smooth locomotion, no matter which graphical settings I was using. The frame timing, according to Steam VR stats was around 7.2 of 12.5.

Basically, the game performs flawlessly on my machine (7700K, 16gb, 1080Ti) on High/Ultra settings....as long as I don't use continuous movement. Blink, teleport, all of that stuff works perfectly, I don't have any issues at all. But as soon as I switch to continuous movement method and push the stick forward, the game begins to 'stutter'. Well, not 'stutter' per se (the stats on SteamVR indicate that frame timing remains consistent and low, as if I wasn't even moving at all), but kinda like 'skips' a few frames, 'jittering' me forward.

I've also noticed that certain objects jitter a bit during smooth movement. For example, the Combine Dropships during the intro, when Alyx is on the balcony: if I look closely at the gunship to the right, its movement is also a bit jittery. Maybe it's something I haven't noticed before, not sure.

Anyway, I'm not sure what caused this to happen. The game was running just fine on releast, but then something changed. It may have something to do with Oculus or maybe Valve screwed something up. I've tried every fix I could find, to no avail. At this point I've given up trying to fix something that may or may not be fixable on my end at all. I'm just glad that I could at least experience the game under normal circumstances on release, before it became like this.

Yup, same with me. I haven't actually tried teleportation yet, because I don't like teleportation out of principle, but everything else you describe sounds like my problem. I'm also glad I at least got a smooth gaming experience with HL:A in March and April, but I'm sad that I can't replay it now with the same specs and same level of performance.

Here's the guide I saw, idk if it works but it seemed promising. Good luck folks

Tried that, didn't work. But thanks for trying anyway :)

I confirm the problem. Same issue. Rift S+Intel Skull Canyon i7+Razer Core X+2080TI. The game worked just fine initially. Now it's almost unplayable.

I see. Thanks for reporting. If people with 2080ti's are getting issues, then there's a problem unrelated to graphics cards and processors. I recently ordered an Inatek PCIe express USB 3.0 card from Amazon and will be testing the game with my Rift S plugged into that as soon as I get it.
