Minecraft got ray tracing support, would be great if Alyx would too

Maybe Half-Life 3 will use raytracing. Assuming that they target roughly a 2025 release.

One major issue is current hardware (eye tracking not widely supported in VR HMDs, therefore no foveated rendering, therefore high fillrate requirement for GPUs ... and current gen GPUs not being able to render raytracing for VR at the required framerate and resolution).

The other is that Valve has just updated Source 2 and support for raytracing requires not only significant changes in the graphics engine but also a different content production pipeline.

Eventually, raytracing will significantly speed up game development, which is super-cool. PS5 does support raytracing in principle (but not sure it will support raytracing for VR, yet, I kind of doubt it). But this will take a few more years to actually be useful.

Raytracing on PC in its current form is highly overrated.

Raytracing as a fully integrated, affordable, and highly performing technology will be amazing.

100% agreed. People don't seem to understand that a truly robust real time raytracing solution will literally take care of so many things games have basically had to "fake" all this time. No more precomputed fakery, lighting will just work and be beautiful all the time.
Raytracing is neat and all; the technology has been around for many years for rendering. Doing raytracing realtime really needs strong hardware that is only coming out now for consumers in limited applications.

Also comparing blocky minecraft with pretty simple geometry and colours to games with geometry beyond blocks and a complex colour scheme is more than a leap.

TBH, Raytracing is diminishing returns right now and adding that on top of taxing VR is just asking for hardware to melt.

RTS is not a raytracing. Also Nvidia have purchased 5-6 years ago Raytracing startup OTOY, which already had working hardware accelerator. No hardware from them ever since, RTX crapware instead.

Stop justifying your purchase of overpriced hardware.

You're right. 1000+ dollars for a card game is ridiculous and should be just banned by authorities or something. It's really not worth the money.

I understand hating Nvidia, but what a strange choice of pun. Does AMD not employ gentiles or something?

This game needs improved physics, and maybe even boneworks-style weapons.

Try 4-6 dog. Where did you get those numbers? Ya silicon is almost to its single element size, but moores law is still going strong.

Moores law is slowing down slightly, but we need to keep in mind any Unforseen MeteorStrike/Zombie/MintCookie/Fortnite/Virus Apocalypse events that might delay Research and Development in the coming months.

We all know the crazy has not run out this year alone.

That's Huang <Leather Fetishist> for you. With his Freud marketing, and stupid fanboys who bought into it. In a 5-6 years price of full chip went from 600$ to 1500$. Now we have his niece as AMD CEO, ruining the company with same approach, so no competition for you.

It's not hating, it's stating facts. And GoyumWorks is Nvidia's snake oil instead of graphical effects.

Yes, and VR, unlike RTX, is a real thing.

We now have perfect MGPU tech for using multiple GPUs for rendering. Actually working unlike SLI and Crossfire. But no, said Huang, you need to keep buying a single top GPU from me.

Okay, so you don't like Nvidia or Jensen Huang, fair play.

But would you agree that true, robust raytracing would be an incredible leap forward in real-time graphics?

I remember reading articles from like, ten years ago about how RT was the 'Holy Grail' of rendering. Then the buzz seemed to disappear for years. I'm excited to see a push of any kind, it's been a long time coming.

Correct, I don't like him for actual BS he does. It's truly Apple of GPUs. And it's a horrible thing for both customers and progress of PC graphics. He tooks lion share of money off PC market but don't invest a cent back.

Nvidia only discredits raytracing, they sell crap raycasting to justify bloated priced of Turing GPUs, which were made for cryptocoin maining.

As for real raytracing, you was absolutely correct in the posts above. Physically correct graphics would replace fake effects, and look way better.

As for raycasting, it's been used in video games since at last 90s. And RDR2 is now flagship achievement of intensive raycasting in a video game. Has amazing lightning, better than everything Huang offers. Rockstar never promoted those effects. Real work don't need vulgar exposition.
