Turn Off Music
Extremely immersive great VR game. Anyone know if there's a way to turn off all in game music? Just want a bit more realism and the ambient music, although good, kills realism for me to always have music playing.

what? The Music design is what makes a game or a movie great.

I usually turn off music in games, especially if combat is involved. I want to use my hearing to detect movement/noises around me and take in all the ambient sound. Not that I dislike the music, I just find it more immersive without it.

Point being yes the music is fantastic and very well done but the request is to have an option to turn it off only for realism as it takes away from realism being that we don't have constant ambient music playing in everyday real life , In vr I don't always want to feel like I'm in a movie I want to feel like I'm really there and its real life. I suppose when playing the game we could just pretend she always has ear pods in and is constantly listening to it from her ambient music playlist lol

This is the same thing as that running joke where people say that Gordon's HEV suit has a built in MP3 player, that always plays the sickest tracks when it detects that fights begin.

Clearly Russel is the one starting up the music in this case 🤣

Yea I usually turn music off in games. Some of it is fantastic, but I like to hear enemies and what they are saying. Sometimes music causes you to miss important dialogue or enemy noises. Plus the whole less immersion thing.

Was a solution ever found to this? Seems odd that every other game out there lets you turn the music off apart from this one.

Would it be possible to track down the music files and replace them with silent ones?

I think I found a possible solution, although not perfect. The VPK files "pak01_403", "pak01_404", and pak01_405 (located in Half Life Alyx\game\hlvr") contain all game music. So if you rename, or delete them, you will remove the music from the game.
However, the problem is that "pak01_403" and "pak01_405" contain some sound effects, so you will remove them as well, while "pak01_404" contains only music.
So you can remove "pak01_404" without any problems.

And about these other two:
pak01_403 contains some unimportant effects whose absence is not even noticed. I think they only concern the sounds of that machine when upgrading weapons and that's it. While pak01_405 contains some late game effects in the Vault complex, but I haven't gotten there yet so I don't know if any absence of effects will be noticeable there. So far, I've gone through almost the entire game without music, and apart from the effect of the machine when upgrading weapon, I haven't noticed any other absence od sound effects.

Edit: Today I finished the game, including the vault complex, and didn't notice any lack of sound effects. So, if someone doesn't want music in the game, they can freely remove those three files.

Thank you so much. The eerie silence is much more atmospheric than any music could be.
