Oculus Quest - Virtual Desktop - Blurry Performance
Hello all!

I recently bought an Oculus Quest & it's pretty great... The main reason I purchased it was mostly to play Half Life Alyx.

I managed to get it working on Virtual Desktop. When I first started the game, the graphics seemed okay. I knew there would likely be some performance/graphic issue with the Virtual Desktop so initially it wasn't a big deal that it wasn't perfect. However I have noticed over time I am finding it harder and harder to play due to the increasing blurriness. Its giving me a headache and I am almost certain its gotten worse. When I walk really close to a wall it is incredibly blurry and my hands/weapons also seem a bit difficult to see. Enough to force myself to play but today I gave up because it was just too uncomfortable after 5 minutes.

Is this just a virtual desktop issue/bad internet issue?

I think my computer is pretty up to scratch aside from the drivers and low RAM.
If this is an issue - I am not sure how to safely update these? With drivers and RAM can I update it online or is it something that needs to go through a comp technician?

The main steam VR screen is equally if not more Blurry so maybe it is a connection issue?

There is so much information online I am a bit overwhelmed so looking for a few easy steps to try that someone can suggest?

Could it be my eyes? Haha.

I was so excited to play this game so pretty disappointed.

Thank you for any and all suggestions. Really appreciate it in advance :)

List your specs or we can't help :)

I played HLA on my Quest with Virtual Desktop. It worked brilliantly. But my set up is quite good, which really helped.

I have a 5Ghz Internet connection and these specs:
i5 9400f
16 GB RAM
Geforce GTX 2070 Super

This meant I could have all settings on high with little latency.

If you're just meeting the minimum specs then your performance may not be as good.

Also, some people are having issues with good specs and some have good performance with low specs.
I guess luck also plays a part.

Im playing on an laptop as well and got a blurry image once. Reason was that my laptop wasn’t set to the highest performance mode „turbo“ but to silence and the horsepower just wasn’t there.

That’s beeing said, my laptop is also significantly stronger (2070) so yours might just be not strong enough. Try to turn setting down (not just presets - also on the advanced settings).

For virtual desktop - make sure nobody else is on the 5ghz wlan network. It does help to create a new .5ghz network JUST for Vr. your pc should be connected per lan to the router

Unfortunately there are several issues.

A) Your computer is a laptop, so it's already going to be underpowered compared to a desktop PC
B) Your graphics card is a GTX 965m, which is well below the minimum specs
C) You processor is pretty old, and running at 2.6 GHz. Even if your pc could handle it on its own, I feel like it's not going to handle streaming over virtual desktop well in the first place.

D) It could also be slow wifi.

Thank you Radboy & JNK for your suggestions. Looks like its time for a laptop upgrade :( Such a pity. I might try getting a cord just to see if it makes any difference and play when my partner is not playing online COD. Really appreciate your suggestions/insights! :)

Make sure you have the latest apk/desktop app here: https://github.com/guygodin/VirtualDesktop/releases

Looks like you Windows is a little behind:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10

Try to use 40MHz 5GHz bandwidth.

Automatically adjust screen resolution in Quest virtual desktop menu.

Use HVEC encoding (latency) in the desktop app.

Most importantly, ensure SteamVR resolution is set to automatic.

Gosh thank you so much for this additional information and the quick link references. I feel like it has played at a decent rate once upon a time so hopefully these additional fixes help. I am unsure how to upgrade drivers etc (which are very out of date) so will have to do some research.

Thanks again! PS: Do you know how I can check/make sure I have 40Mhz 5Hgz bandwidth? What is the easiest way to test it?

Windows 10 automatically update drivers, but you can also use https://store.steampowered.com/app/920490/Driver_Booster_for_Steam/ to download the latest drivers, do not buy the premium service.

Use SideQuest to update the APK (download from github) drag-and-drop in the sidequest menu with the quest connected to the PC to install the latest VD.

Best place to find out is either through the Wifi network settings or best on the router itself.

Wont do this myself, yet. No stuttering for me, but this will probably aid OP.

Asking an underpowered laptop user to use any form of super sampling, lmao

To put it in perspective OP, the graphics card that laptop has, or at least the one I saw had a GTX 965m, the minimum GPU is a GTX 1060. A GTX 1060 is better by about 150%.

Your problem is probably strictly a hardware problem.
Barrett_killz Apr 19, 2020 @ 12:56pm
I played the entire game to the end on a non-gaming laptop on the Oculus Quest wirelessly via Virtual Desktop and had no issues whatsoever, aside from occasional stutters due to my VRAM limitations.

i7-10710U, 6/12 x 3.9 Ghz
GTX 1650 Max-Q 4GB GDDR5
16GB LPDDR3 RAM

Uh that is still a gaming laptop, a weak one yes but it still has a dedicated GPU. That laptop is way better than the OP's, along with being made with much more recent parts.
