Mongoose Error
If anyone is still having problems with the mongoose error, i solved mine by going into SteamVr settings go to the startup/shutdown tab and "choose Startup overlay apps" and deselecting the app so its says 0 selected. The game booted up fine after that.

Yea, I just experienced that issue, had like 2 cases of the game just turning itself off without any message. The first time after I restarted the game and it didn't load, I saw something with mongoose and SteamVR needing a restart. After doing so, the game started up again and then it closed itself without any message after a couple of minutes of playing while at Russells place.
Gonna try the solution you are saying worked for you and see if that fixes it, thanks!

Disable your Antivirus, as soon as I turned it off it booted it right up.

I was using SteamVR beta 1.17.2. And I reinstall it 1.16.10 not beta version. And error is gone.

This put me on the right track. I added the Half-Life: Alyx exe-file to the list of exceptions of my firewall and the problem was (finally) fixed.

Right-click on half-life alyx in your library to bring up your menu. Properties>General>In Launch options type "-novid". That fixed my mongoose error, but it would crash. So, I ran it in beta and now it works. Click Steam in the upper left corner, select settings>Account: beta participation>change drop-down menu: steam beta. I hope this helps you as it did for me.

This is still an issue. Many fixes have been suggested, but none solve the underlying bug. Fix it, Valve!

Yup,
Tried every single suggestion here. Still getting mongoose error on start up.

What solved it for me was adding ' -novid' to Properties->General->Launch Options for Half Life Alyx.

Nothing else worked:
- killing webvrhelper jobs? No
- verifying files of VR and Half Life Alyx? No
- restarting? No
- disabling antivirus? No

But just adding "-novid" did the job.

It's weird how this just crops up out of the blue. One day it works. Next day it will not play.
