Game crashed and lost saves
I was half way through chapter 6 when the game black screened and PC automatically rebooted. This is the first time it has done this. However when loading the game back up, all of my saves from chapter 6 were gone. I am now having to reply chapter 5. Has anyone else experienced this problem ?

Im playing on 5700xt Gigabyte, 3600x Ryzen, Oculus Rift S.

I don't mind playing through the chapter again, but I am scared that I am going to lose my progress again.

you're probably better off tracing out the evidently ongoing issues with AMD gpu's involving black screens and crashing.
AMD recommends reporting this directly to them instead of unintentionally publicizing their issues

Yeah probably - it's a bit strange that my saves have vanished though. I was manually saving as well.

This happened to me as well. This isn't a driver issue. Video card drivers don't delete all of your local saves which then get replaced with your latest cloud save. At most, you would corrupt one save file if it was saving the game when the crash occurred.

No matter the cause of the crash, your entire local save shouldn't be wiped. This is a bug/issue with HL:A

to confirm.
your game black screens, reboots and then you lose information that was in use during an unexpected shut down that is known to corrupt data because thats what happens during unexpected shut downs, thats why everything that is being written or updated says do not power off, because IT IS KNOWN THAT IT CORRUPTS DATA, and you're blaming the game for it?

To be fair this has been my only crash in 12 hours of gameplay. For anyone who has had the same problem, you can start a new game from any chapter. It had registered that I had got to chapter 6, so I started from there. It is quite generous with the amount of resin it gives you also, so I was able to get my previous gun upgrades.

You don't seem to understand. If the game crashes and corrupts the save that is in progress due to a driver issue, that is not on the game. What the issue is that ALL save games are lost, not just 1 save. That doesn't make sense for a driver crash to selectively wipe out all of your saves, not just the save that gets corrupted nor game files.

The session that I played was a bit over 3 hours, with MANY auto saves made and my own quicksave. All were wiped. Thankfully, steam cloud restored the saves it had before I started that session. So to reiterate, instead of losing just one save, I lost every save, no matter how many minutes or hours previously the save was made.

oh i understand that unplugging the power to your computer can corrupt data while an application is using that data. have you tried installing the game on a different hard drive?

Out of interest what Gfx card are you using ?

@rudygt

No, you still don't understand. I am talking about multiple save files being gone when only one should be gone. The game doesn't, or shouldn't, be writing to all game saves, only the one it is making anew or overwriting. So even if you have a power outage, driver crash, PSU explode, etc, only what was being written to the hard drive int the moment would get corrupted and lost, not the other save files.

@Velvet Eyebrows

5700 XT, but I didn't have a black screen crash. I have never had that problem though I have heard it being an issue for some 5700 series users. The game simply froze on screen and sound kept looping. I could alt tab and everything fine. I opened the task manager and it show the game not responding. I waited for a couple min and it still didn't start working again so I end tasked it.
