Valve Expects Pancake HL:A Mod to Disappoint
https://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/half-life-alyx-non-vr-mod/

And says they expect players' disappointment with the pancake mod to teach pancake players why Valve decided to make the game in VR in the first place..

It's a shame there are people who want to ruin the game for themselves by playing the pancake version or watching playthroughs on YouTube.

Why not just wait a year or two for VR prices to come down so you can play the best possible version of the game if you're too poor to afford it at the moment?

I'm planning on watching a video just because I won't be able to get it for few years. I really don't want to dodge and avoid spoilers for that long. We live in a age were things are easily spoiled within months of release. Like I even get spoiled by YouTube thumbnails. Example of this happened just few weeks. I play ff14 and I do high end content. I didn't want to be spoiled on the the final boss's final design of the most recent raid tier but just one day one of the YouTuber I watch just had her on there thumbnail. I was really upset that they used the bosses final form as a thumbnail. Anyway it may not be the best way to experience but it's the only way I have right now.

Seen this recently with HLA too, literally the ending and even after credits scene being put as a thumbnail. I was lucky enough to finish the game before these came out, but I couldn't help but feel bad for the people who just got spoiled from stuff like that

I can only guess you guys watch a lot of gaming media on YouTube or something then, because I have never had a similar experience for a movie, book, tv show, video game, etc...

And stuff like that more likely would be if you watch a lot of gaming media, as I indicated earlier.

I've never seen spoilers like that on YouTube, but then again I don't waste time watching gaming media so... no surprise YouTube wouldn't suggest those things for me, really.

Never watch gaming media except vnn. Just a lot of Half Life, as I am sure many other HL fans watch

If you're watching Half-Life videos on YouTube and haven't played the latest Half-Life game that's been released recently, you're pretty much asking for spoilers. There's an inherent risk in that activity that should be pretty obvious.

If it's that big a problem for you, you might try watching YouTube signed out (this might make Half-Life videos get suggested less); or better yet, do something more worthwhile with your time than watching YouTube..

If you're too poor to afford a $400 VR set (assuming you're young), watching YouTube is probably not a smart way to use your time resources in the first place. Using time to get marketable skills and increase your income, or working a part time job with spare time would both be smarter options for you.

I mean he has the game and said he finished the game as well just above. But otherwise I'd really wish news outlets and youtubers would avoid direct spoilers which they often don't do. I didn't read news either until I've finished the game, I've opened google news and the first article was the post credits ending screenshot and that HL3 is confirmed. And it's pretty sad that in general you get spoiled an experience, if you are on a Game of Thrones discord and actively talking about the show that's risky and you assume the risk, but even if you try and avoid it gets in your face elsewhere. And that is with me already banning a lot of news outlets in my feed for spoilers. But at this point I'd have to ban every outlet and not see gaming related news if I want to avoid any and all spoilers.

Stop wasting your time on youtube, youngsters!

it wont dissapoint in my mind, what it will do is make all the crybabies shout this instead...
we told you vr was a gimmick and this game is now proven to work without VR

because the objective is to make enough noise to scare valve into not making more VR games especially when it effects larger titles like half life, or any other developer of massive games

they will all start playing the pancake mode with imported half life 2 weapon mods clear the levels in seconds run around holding a floating resin shouting things like told you it works

fck VR ~ let this be a lesson valve, thats whats going to happen

It's a 100% VR game.
Playing pancake will be like playing a game with your monitor turned off.
People thinking of using this mod, try to resist the urge. When you finally get a headset you will more than get rewarded for your patience.

Imagine the eventual positivity rating plunge when people start buying the game to play with a flat mod. People won't grasp the idea that the game is actually markedly better in VR. They will think: I know it's not in VR, but I get MOST of the game and it sux!

I suspect VR players will point that out pretty quickly though!

It's a win win for the VR game as I see it. Make it in VR then boost the sales by having flat screen players play it. That way VR game sales significantly increase and more likelihood of more being made. Overall ratings won't matter at that point because the bulk of the VR fans will already have bought it and it's obvious to the developer that they bombed after the mod release. The VR players ratings will still be good to encourage follow on VR sales, especially once the sales kick in.

Non-VR Alyx is like visiting Disneyland in Google Street view. :)
