VR novelty wears off after some time.
I mean most reviews are very likely from people who have very limited experience with VR, so these reviews would be chock full with superlatives, because VR does that to you in the first few weeks.

However once the novelty of being in the game wears off somewhat, it is a different picture. I now use VR almost exclusively for horror and related games, for the rest i prefer my 75' SONY which is plenty immersive sitting very close and 4k HDR man 4k HDR....

So any opinions from VR veterans?

Ahh Vive from 2016, Index from June of 2019 still loving VR - and Alyx is one of the best if not *the* best products I've seen.

YMMV but VR isn't a novelty, its a whole new grammar for games and is still in a state of rapid evolution - I'd say its the exact opposite of a novelty or a gimmick because its not just a single mechanic, it changes every element of the way games are presented and interacted with and when you're playing a VR app, its not like you can forget you're using VR and leveraging its advantages (and struggling with its downsides but hey)

Strip VR out of Alyx and you have nothing, just a curiously slow paced fps.

Also I'm unsure its 'very likely' most reviews are from people with limited VR experience.

Bought in 2016. Still enjoy it. But yes the wow factor has worn off but there is no way the immersion will ever be worn out by this device. Which is what makes me keep playing it every now and then.

If it's motion sickness I have a high tolerance too it due to being out at sea quite a bit in my younger years but VR games where you can't teleport around to move around will eventually get to me. Like that Boneworks game.

Don't get VR for 1 game. Get it if you got the money to spare or you are really into it for the long run.

As good as Alyx is...it's not worth buying an entire system for by a stretch.

If you are short on cash only buy VR if you enjoy VRchat or Beat Saber. They are the only games that can you keep you using the tech for months.

That said, if you got VR...Alyx is a must have. It's not a masterpiece of a game. It is however a masterpiece in the sense that I hope it will push VR forward as a whole.

Been at VR for 3 years. It's still pretty awesome to me. They have loops like other games. For instance, people actually find Doom Eternal's combat boring after a while because of the Executions heavy gameplay.

after almost 1k hours in steam vr before i played hl:a, and i wow'd all the way through

The wow factor died out after a week of playing but the immersion sure is still there.

dude, there isn't a single game in VR that can even touch DOOM 2016.
Best games by far are still 2D games at the moment. (havent played Alyx)

I've had my VR system since 2016, Steam says I've got about 3,500 hours running SteamVR. I usually jump in at least once a week. 4 years now, and the novelty still hasn't worn off for me yet.

I've been playing VR for 9 months, still waiting for the novelty to wear off, which most likely will never happen.

Yeah, ori was great, but if you brought up Doom why are you promoting 2D games?

Also Sairento comes pretty close, and playing Doom 2016 in VR actually even closer.

It's mediocre, physics and gameplay wise, other games are better.
HLA only has a nice story and visuals. Gameplay wise, it's nothing too good.

Still there, even with the PSVR headset it was still there. At least I think, I still like VR.

Its not about the novelty anymore, its about interactivity

I’ve played VR for the last 3 years and the novelty has indeed worn off - it’s now my preferred and default way to play games.

Putting on the headset for the first time was a gaming paradigm shift for me, like when I first saw 16 bit graphics, or the move to proper 3D texture-mapped polygons.

Though the novelty has gone, that’s not to say that VR has lost its capacity to awe and amaze. I still frequently have to stop and admire a vista in Skyrim or an alien world in Elite Dangerous or No Man’s Sky.

VR also allows you to do things that aren’t possible in flatscreen. That stuff never gets old, and HL:A is a prime example.
