Jittery/shaky/vibrating hands. Valve, plz fix (videos inside)(soooo many have this problem)
Video showing the problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rn6hvJew824. Here's another one by someone else (he did it more up-close, so easier to see): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoZ2oZpr3Z8.

Apparently doesn't matter how powerful your PC is, or what headset/controllers you use, or how much you lower the graphics/SS settings - the hands shake/jitter/vibrate in the game, but not in the SteamVR menu or in the game's own menu (guess they use some smoothening technique, but not while playing) . Was just gonna play through the game, but tested everything first because planning on recording it, but man, I think I'll wait for this hand problem to be fixed first as it's very annoying and will probably make it hard to aim at things at a distance. It's also hard to check the details of things I hold, like the book in the beginning on the balcony because my hands shake like I have Parkinson's (which I don't have, and again - my hands are perfectly stable IRL, and also in any other VR title I've tried, even in Half-Life: Alyx itself, but only when the game's menu is open).

Lots of comments from people with this problem, ranging from Quest, Rift S, Vive, full kit Index, etc:

Apparently it wasn't like this in the first version they released. Some people mentioned they only got it after 1.2, before that they are 100% sure they didn't have the jitter problem. I asked two buddies who has the game if they had it as well, both said no, I replied they probably DO have it but didn't notice it or haven't updated the game. One of them took a look again and said "Now I notice it, thanks :/", the other one plays offline and hasn't update the game since release day, so guess that explains why he doesn't have the problem. I can't reinstall the game as it now only comes with the latest patches. Maybe I can get him to upload his version to replace mine and disable updates.

And nope, I have no reprojection, can lower my stuff so it's like 3ms, got 3x 2.0 base stations, no reflections, the base stations are stable. Only this game has this problem for me. All other games have rock solid tracking.

Whenever someone brings up this problem, they always get the same replies that it's their computer's fault, too slow, reprojection, badly mounted base stations, reflective surfaces, too high SS or graphics, even though they - like me - have already explained it only happens in this game. How can hand tracking be flawless/stable in all/most other titles, even in SteamVR itself, and even in the game's own menu (but not when you exit the menu) be the fault of the previously mentioned stuff?

For those that just HAVE to know my specs, even though it doesn't matter, they are: 9900K (not OC'd, will when needed), 2080 (also not OC'd), 32gb 3200Mhz, NVMe SSDs, 144Hz monitor (yeah, also doesn't matter, but threw it in anyway). Windows 10 Pro 64-bit. I'm using the full Valve Index kit (also have DK1, DK2, CV1, Go, Quest, etc).

Probably just the result of slight variations on the tracking data, it doesn't look like a big deal

It sadly is for me. I still haven't left the balcony, as I wanted to try everything first, fine-tune settings, and this one is like a game-breaker to me. I don't want people to think I'm 80 years old or have some condition in my videos of this game. I now know why people's hands shake in most HL: Alyx YouTube videos I watched. But the main problem is aiming at things in the distance and looking at stuff up close, sooo annoying. I know MOST people are probably fine with this.

I find the jitter is not big enough to impact things like aiming or interacting with objects.
I also notice it if I pay attention and look for it. But if you forget about it, its fine.

are you using standing room only? or do you have a full room setup?

Full room setup. 3x 2.0 base stations. Can move around in a quite big area, but limiting myself to only a 1.5x1.5 meter round carpet/mat.

Have the same issue, really annoying! Rift S, 1080ti, 9900k, 32GB.

I have something similar with my setup and its due to wireless interference with my bluetooth connection. If I turn off my devices using wireless internet (phones, streaming, etc.) , it pretty much clears up.

As you are using a recording software and positioning is extreamly timesensitive it might have a cpu time conflict.
The 9900K is an 8 core 16 thread cpu so you should have room to work with here.

Try this:
Get a free CPU controll program (i use "Process Lasso") and change priority class + I/O priority + RAM priority of the game and VR to high.
Restrict your recording software to the last 4 cpu cores or less.

This will greatly reduce latancy in VR by blocking cpu time untill VR is done with it.

I do not have any bluetooth nearby, but also jitter, like you and the others here. - With my first setup it was terrible. The controllers were bumping around. - Then i cover all mirrors in the room, and it worked better. I am not sure, if window planes can effect the tracking.
i will take the hint with bluetooth and other devices in general, but i fear, they just do not have smoothen the movement of the controllers in the game yet.

Lighthouse tracking is using infrared so all reflective surfaces can interfere with it by creating a "fake" basestation.

So i will avoid every (probably) reflective surface in the room. Whats about TFT Screens?

In a worst case scenario a pocket mirror could break your tracking.
In reality it means you should avoid playing in the wallmirror gym.
