Let's talk about weapons damage...
Okay, I just want to say that I love the game so far. This is one of the very few issues I have with the game so far.

Why on earth does it take literally 8 headshots to kill the weakest combine soldier? (I counted 3 times over with different soldiers) but only 10 body shots? It's chewing so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ much ammo and the game doesn't reward you for being skilled. Sometimes I have to shoot a zombie 3-4 in the "head" times to get the headcrab off only to also have to shoot that damn headcrab 3 times (so 6-7 bullets). The electric headcrab ate like 4-5 shotgun blasts at point blank range and then another 3-4 pistol MAGS.

Bullet sponges are a real turn off in VR for me.

Does this change with difficulty settings? Lowering it might reduce the sponginess of enemies

Maybe, I certainly hope they don't equate difficulty with how many bullets opponents can take..

Do you play on easier/harder than the default setting and have a different bullet count required to kill?
Oh thank god I'm not the only one. Combine feel as spongy as HL1 soldiers, but you aren't equipped with the proper firepower.

And the headcrabs not dying despite shooting the zombies in the head just feels like sacrilege in a half-life game.

Enemies are still pretty spongey in Normal mode. I still don't know why some headcrabs "survive" and others don't when you kill a zombie (considering I am getting all headshots on them to begin with.)

That being said, I have been scouring every corner for Resin so I generally have a tone of pistol ammunition, shotgun shells seem a little more scarce.

Same. The shotgun is the panic weapon at this time because unless I'm in real trouble, I'm using the pistol. Heck, the amount of health shots I've found is out weighing ammo. I'd be okay with this to some degree if I could say do some kind of melee (in the subway, I held onto the pipe and tried to hit a zombie with it to no avail).

God help you if you don't have any ammo and you are at a lock.

Yeah I am playing on hard mode and the zombies seem very spongey. Not up to the combine yet. Can anyone confirm that the enemies take less bullets on easy mode ?

I plan to restart and take a look, since I missed some early game Easter eggs.

i hope difficulty doesnt correlate to spongey-ness I actually found most of the enemies too easy and was going to play through on hard hoping it would make it more challenging without making enemies more sponge, I guess I'll just have to see. the ammo count seemed fine on normal. I never ran out, but i came dangerously close and that seems like proper pacing and balance to me, but i do agree zombies are too spongey, and combines shouldnt take 10 headshots when thats where the least of their armor is. body shots arent even viable but then you get to the antlions which look scary but are just set up as shooting galleries and pose zero threat and go down in 3 bullets.

Some enemies also have weakpoints, so aim for those and they go down in one shot. some zombies have glowing green stuff on them that explodes, some combine have a tank on their back that you can aim for even if they are looking at you.
But I do agree, those that don't have weakpoints are a bit spongey.

Considering soldiers are wearing armor, it makes sense for them to take more hits. But then, headshot is always a priority, also shooting at weakpoints should be considered more.
Shooting the headcrab mouth, when they are about to lunge on you seems to be an easy kill.

Besides, I skipped most of headcrabs encounter in early chapters because it just waste of bullets to kill them, even when they are in grouped. You can easily avoid and go past them.

this is one of my few gripes with this game. i dont want to have to question whether or not i actually took out a headcrab with a headshot - its like sometimes it does n sometimes it doesnt based on pre-scripted events. kinda bothersome but otherwise a great game imo

I think the game seems to have some sort of director like in L4D and can make the game easier/harder depending on your resources.

I noticed that as well. The thing is, this is not a pancake shooter, where you run around at top speed blasting everything to get through the game as fast as possible. This is more dramatic and immersive and puzzle oriented. Use the pistol upgrades to find weak spots on the target. Use the gas cans lying around to your advantage. Block attacks by holding an object/shield in front of you. Lure opponents into traps. It more about the experience. You're not just running around at top speed blasting stuff.

The columbine soldiers go down when you shoot them in the face a few times. You may have to peek around corners and time your shots.

I'm playing on the default Normal setting.

I'm really hoping someone makes a mod to double the enemy count, but cut their health in half. Shooting is fun, bullet sponges are not.

I played to chapter 6 or 7 on normal difficulty, but because I literally ran out of ammo in every major fight I reduced it to story.
In normal PC games I am not really a fan of such "♥♥♥♥♥modes", but I didn't really feel the difference in VR other than not having to worry about ammo
