It sounds so obvious, yet the easiest solutions are the hardest to find sometimes :)
HTC Vive grey screen means the headset isn't tracking. This can be hardware or software. Sounds like software for the OP since admin rights fixed it for them.
It happens to me when the sensors next to my nose get too hot(covering them with tape actually fixes it since you don't need all the sensors for the headset to work). I run an air conditioner in the room I play in now and it doesn't happen anymore. To see if this is happening try covering them one at a time and once you find the bad one it will start working. Then you can leave the bad one covered while playing
