Since this is prequel to HL2, I suppose original HL would be more appropriate and THEN HL2 + episodes?

EDIT: Maybe Black Mesa then? Since it's HL refreshed?

The writers of Alyx reccomend you do as well as episode 1 and 2.

Since its a prequel i dont see why you need play ep1&2 but you could play hl2 just to be introduced to city 17 and alyx.

This is odd recommendation since the Alyx supposedly takes place before HL2???

Valve said in the Gameinformer interview that at a minimum it would be a good idea to revisit HL:2:ep2.

Do you think that Alyx will give fans some closure on the end of Episode 2?

It's not a bad idea for players to have refreshed themselves on the events of Episode 2 before starting Half-Life: Alyx.

HL games are free to play right now so get on it. Shouldn't take more than 20 hours or so to play HL2, EP 1 and 2.

Osteniably it's a prequel so it shouldn't matter.
In practice though obviously it's better that you play HL2 plus the episodes to better understand the character you're playing as.

Since they recommended we play the other games, they may write around your understanding of characters explored in HL 2, ep 1 & 2. Things may have more impact, or you might understand more just by knowing who people referenced are. Also, as Seals said, you understand Alyx better as well.

So, probably just minor stuff. I'm sure the game will stand on its own.
