Ugh. Why is "Pancake" the term that seems to have caught on?
I've been in the VR scene since the very beginning, and both "flat" and "pancake" (originally as a joke) caught on to describe non-VR games...which was necessary because people were previously saying "2D" and that was confusing.

...ugh, but here I see (with more newcomers than any other VR game) that "pancake" seems to be the one that's caught on. Why? It was mildly funny as a joke, I guess..but I'd hate to see everyone at large start referring to non-VR games as "pancakes"...whether reasonable or not, it feels more elitist to me. Like needing to be in on a joke. Whereas "flat" just makes sense, accuracy wise and feels less exclusionary. Does anyone else feel that way?

You all realize people with VR also use a pancake, hell VR is just slapping 2 pancakes to your head.

If you're getting offended by the word pancake then you are just part of the hypersensitive issue with society today and need to start worrying about things that matter.

I was about to say the same, we are all pancake users!

The use of pancake in this instance, probably came from the simile, 'flat as a pancake', which dates from the 1500's (according to dictionary.com).
Context dear boy.

It's right there flat as a pancake, all the context you need.

Or you don't understand the wider context in which the term is used on forums such as this, to belittle, even when it's spelled out to you.

Yes, we know the term 'flat as a pancake' in itself, isn't intended to insult people. But the context in which it is often used here, most certainly is.

You're just being way to sensitive, it means monitors are flat as a pancake and people saying it also game on monitors that are a flat as pancakes.

I played on console for years and was called a peasant and a pleb so now that I have a top of the line PC and VR, it can be fun to look down on those same people who would never let up about the PC master race lmao

In any case, all games are 'flat' if you want to get into it. Even the little screens VR uses are flat and not really 3D.

Which is fine, because our brains fill in the gaps and when we play a '3D' game like say Grand Theft Auto, our brains are fooled into thinking it's a real 3D environment we can move around in, in all dimensions.

True 'flat' games are ones like the very early GTA games, prior to GTA 3, which were top down. They are 'pancake'.

We know why the term is being gleefully used here, it's just to divide people. It certainly doesn't help to bring people into the fold, which I presume is what VR fans want.

"It's just to divide people"

The average NON-VR fan in this forum: OMGOMGOMG WHY THIS GAME NOT FOR MY FLAT SCREEN, VALVE IS BAD, I AM ENTITLED TO MY GAME EVEN THOUGH I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THIS GAME WAS COMING, REEEEEEEEEEEE

The average VR user: Ok pancaker

That is complete and utter rubbish.

Using the term, even if it is used in the context of a put down isn't offensive. It's the put down that may or may not be offensive. All the term is doing is defining a set of users for which the put down applies.

That sounds like weasel words and an attempt at plausible deniability.

I think you are trying to use big words without knowing their meaning, I strongly suggest you go look up what 'plausible deniability' means and rethink that one.

Also, expand pancake out and into it's full meaning, i.e. flat screen, put it into any put down sentence and then read it back, I think you'll find it's the surrounding text that is the put down, 'not flat screen'.
