the Defend the Freighter missions are bull****
I had 5 squads of mk11 vipers protecting it, and 2 bezerks 3 adamants and 2 ranger corvettrs forming a protective ring around it, as well as a suipply ship providing plating. And still it is destroyed? I am going to ignore all defend the freighter missions from now on. Total BS/

In the 'escort' missions, always run the transports away from the battle area. The Cylon AI will always go after your big ships first, ignoring the transports, thus keeping the transports out of the area is best. And keep running away. You can assign a couple of Viper squadrons to defend the transport as an added measure. There is one campaign mission where the Cylons jump in 'behind' near the transports, so having the Vipers around to defend is useful.

But forming a circle of big ships around them is simply going to put the transports in the middle of the fight - literally.
As long as the freighters are moving away from the action, the Cylons usually won't chase them. Keep some Vipers with them in case of missiles, but otherwise play aggresively with your big ships and you should be fine. Don't think of it as an escort mission, it's more of a distraction.

I don't know if the same type of mission, but I save before I go on a freighter mission. Then if I start the mission and the freigher is too close to the Cylons I just quit and reload until the freighter starts further away where I have chance to intercept the Cylons first.

Save-scumming, but, it gets the job done.

Another way to do it is just have some Artemis battlestars with you, they are magnets for enemy fire, the cylons will almost always prioritize the the battlestar, so you just mop up.

Just run the freighter away from the Cylons while moving up and down, they won't catch it and your fleet will intercept them way before they pose a danger.

thanks folks, I have the artemis blueprints but only a few hundred requisition points and I've been spending those to promote officers, so it feels like I;'ll never have enough to afford those blueprints

You really, really need to do the missions....
and tbh you don't really need officers for all your fleets, just those that are parked on colonies, so in short, you only really need 12 officers max. Usually even less since you don't usually get all the colonies in line.

I started doing those missions...no other way to get RP properly. I succeeded at one of them, finally. Though my tactics haven't differed all that much.

I hate escort and protection missions. I just want to blow sh*t up.

You really, really need to change your tactics if they are failing.

I have tried this about 6 times in a row now, and they always go after the freighters, they ignore anything else on grid

OP, you didn't have any battlestars??? Well that probably explains why the Cylon malus was aimed at the freighters then (though even with BSs one or two revenants will always pursue the freighters with fanatical fervor).

Move the freighters away from the battle as quickly as possible, assigning one or two squads to defend them, then move your main fleet aggressively to intercept/shield the ships attempting to pursue. Sometimes it takes more than one try. Also yes, escort missions absolutely suck in this game (in most games really).

Proximity mines: spam them. They are very good at area denial and splitting up the enemy fleet as the cylons will go out of their way to avoid them.
Otherwise, I had good success in escort missions even without battlestars by having the transports fly inside the daidalos.
