But forming a circle of big ships around them is simply going to put the transports in the middle of the fight - literally.
Save-scumming, but, it gets the job done.
You really, really need to do the missions....
and tbh you don't really need officers for all your fleets, just those that are parked on colonies, so in short, you only really need 12 officers max. Usually even less since you don't usually get all the colonies in line.
You really, really need to change your tactics if they are failing.
I have tried this about 6 times in a row now, and they always go after the freighters, they ignore anything else on grid
Move the freighters away from the battle as quickly as possible, assigning one or two squads to defend them, then move your main fleet aggressively to intercept/shield the ships attempting to pursue. Sometimes it takes more than one try. Also yes, escort missions absolutely suck in this game (in most games really).
Otherwise, I had good success in escort missions even without battlestars by having the transports fly inside the daidalos.
