How close to finished is the game?
The game looks good but before I buy I'd like to know how much content there is to come.

How much do you perceive it has now? Cause it's a lot.

I don't know how long their roadmap is, and I hope they are going to keep working on it for a long time. But I agree with Hektor that as it stands this game is absolutely loaded with content.

I've played every survival and engineering type game there has been and nothing has ever come close to this game. Some often want to call it Space Engineers light but that really is backwards. Space Engineers is the one lacking compared to this game.

Space Engineers is to Stationeers as vanilla Minecraft is to an extensive Minecraft FTB mod pack overhaul. Tremendous complexity and ways to engineer what you want. Especially with all the logic and programming stuff.

Truly my favorite game of all time.

It's been around a few years already, so I don't know if primary content will be slowing down in favor of mechanics tweaking, it wouldn't surprise me. But in just the last year RW has put out quite a bit. Several pieces of content I haven't even touched yet, because even the basics are a challenge.
Stationeers is unique and not for every game play style. The objects are are a plenty but the 'content' is trying to make things work. Then make them work better. It's way way more thinking than other 'games'. I really don't even consider it a game but that's subjective.
It is the thrill of victory and agony of defeat. And it's super awesome.

Stationeers are made not born.
I have never taken pride in playing a video game. But my atmospherics has me fist pumping even though it's still kinda broken and manual. And blowie uppie.

Last night I half-jokingly asked my gf to congratulate me since even though I didn't make much physical progress, nothing exploded during 6 hours of gameplay, 5 of which I was having power shortage issues.

to OP:
The game is deep, diverse, fairly low on bugs, and has an ending goal (launch yourself to the next planet).

If it is lacking anything, it is just filling in information for new players; the in-game wikipedia is thick, but also has many barren entries. However, instead of completely polishing the game, the devs keep it semi-glossy while just releasing new modules and mechanics that deepen the game further.

In all, there's never been a better time to start, but if you are waiting for a game no-longer in development, nobody but the devs could tell you how long you have to wait.

I have to agree with @Venusgate on documentation. It has been a constant source of frustration for many and I know it has sent a lot of folks rage quitting. Things have changed so much that you often get outdated info.
The devs and many hardcore knowledge Stationeers are on Discord. On Steam you will mostly get....what you get on Steam. Sometimes surprisingly insightful things. I have found Youtube to generally be the best source of info but again, you have to watch out for outdated info.
