Best nitrogen/oxygen ratio in air tank?
I've been trying a 68|38 Nitrogen/Oxygen combination and it seems to kill me.. For some reason.

No more than 20% Nitrogen. Or if you really want to huff the good ♥♥♥♥ 6% / 14% / 80% (co2/no/o2)

Thanks Bracht.

think you got this backwards....
what I normally do is match the earths atmosphere at 78% N2, 20% O2, and and because we do not have argon, helium, etc.. I just spend the last 2% on CO2 for plants... works out Great.

And actually I was providing breathable atmo. Tank gas should be similar but your co2 filters will pull any co2 out of your tank before you can breathe it. Nitrogen at less than 20% is a solid mix but you can just do o2 and be fine. The filters will handle the rest.

Yea that will for sure kill you in atmo. In your tank it will likely kill you too. Over 30% nitrogen is toxic in the game.

dont think i had trouble with the 80/20 mixture N/O in my base. what had me struggling though was the NO causing stun before i filtered that stuff out.

Bracht, what are you talking about? How is over 30% nitrogen toxic? Unless they just added that, I've never seen that, and it would be very unrealistic. Nitrogen is not toxic, you just need some oxygen with it to breathe.

If you put anything else than O2 in your canister in the suit you need a filter to filter that out. Otherwise it fill your helmet completly and you will pass out because the amount of oxygen is to low.

Currently the canister in your suit should be 100% oxygen. I'm not sure if that is going to change with coming changes, we will see.

Yeah, I was basing my ratio off of the compressed air in scuba tanks with a bit extra oxygen as we do not have helium, nitrogen is an inert gas and makes up 78% of the air we breath, as a game that's heavily about gas mixing and claiming to be a hardcore experience; this seems like it should be the way things are.

are you confusing Nitrous oxide(No2) with Nitrogen(N2)?

No, N2 accounts for about 78% of Earth's atmosphere. The NO2 content is thankfully negligable, because NO2 is toxic.

Your idea was good, but you forgot that your space suit is a closed system. Using an air mix containing other gasses besides O2 will lead to those gasses accumulating if not filtered out.

What Lim Dul said ... oxygen tank from the space suite only 100% oxgen. This is because of the pressure. Any other gas then oxygen makes you sick. I don't know what happens if you put up the suite pressure up to 100kPa. The lower the pressure the more oxygen is needed.

For example: 100 kpa with 21% Oxygen makes a ppO2 of 21 kPa ... this "O2" pressure is needed for your body so it can absorb enough Oxygen. If you lower the pressure to 20 kPa then you need 100% Oxygen to reach a ppO2 of 20kPa ...

For your suit tank you want pure O₂. You want this because if you've got N₂ in the mix, you either have N filters and they'll pull it all out of your helmet, completely wasting the effort of carrying it, or you don't, and they won't, and you'll die.

The reason you'll die with N₂ in your suit mix and no N filter is, your breathing doesn't consume it and it's never removed from your helmet, so when your breathing does consume O₂ and convert it to CO₂, which does get filtered out, the 80% volume of N₂ stays right where it is, in your helmet, and the 20% volume of O₂ which you used gets replaced ... from your suit canister, with an 80/20 mix. Leaving you after a few breaths with an 80% + (80%*20%=16%) 96% N₂, 4% O₂ mix in your helmet, and it only gets worse from there.

Thanks for the great explanation Blueberry.
You're very welcome.
