Why so many food recipe?

Hi, I just started playing 3 days ago and I'm to the point where I completed my first working farming setup. Searching online I realised that there's is a LOT of different food types with milk and eggs etc... and I've been wondering, why? Why there's so many food types when I can just tincan my pumpkins and be done farming for the next 30 days. What am I missing here? thanks in advance!

We have not properly balanced the survival aspects, the intent is many of the different food will give you different bonuses and so over time, you will want more variety (and more challenges!). Additionally, more food types gives more options for interacting with traders.

I want to get seeds from Potatoes and do a Watney on Mars. I use canned tomatoes at the moment.
