Multiplayer not working.

I've opened a port forward, tried to get my friend to join, but it consistently says he can't connect, and on my end in the logs it says "failed to register '(game port)' under UPnP. Can't figure out why. I want to simply host a game, and a few updates ago I was fully capable. What happened here?

disable UPnP and use the forwardings as you did in the past

Oh- So P2P isn't an option anymore because that's the default now?

You need the Gameport-forwarding at least. If your friend then connect to your WANIP he gets to your server - P2P so to say.

For UPnP to work, you need to enable it on your router. If You don’t want to use UPnP, you need to forward the ports used (default port is 27016)

P2P was a steam only function. We have stripped all DRM bound features from the game, so steam only functionality is no longer available
