I was thinking the same thing.
According to the wiki you can edit the files to change the label text color and size but that's not a great solution. I'd prefer something built into the game possibly using the scroll wheel on our mouse to select a color.
I think the only way around it for now is the solution you mentioned and not paint that section of pipe white.
take a spreycan and sprey it example blue.
Try to install it on the pip and see if that change the colour.
( tip for everyone.. if you drop example 10 pipes on the ground and paint it, then all pipes will change colur.. that way you only spreay one time and use very little paint, vs painting everything manualy that uses more paint ).
