In regards to ports, as I said, I've tried forwarding them on my router. It didn't work. Changing the number on them made no difference, neither client-to-client nor dedicated-to-client. It still doesn't work.
I'm starting to think this whole thing might have something to do with my router+modem setup. I'm thinking forwarding the ports on my router isn't working because the modem might be blocking them. I tried checking for this with online applications that tell you if a certain point is open and, indeed, they chow closed despite the rules I've set on my router. The problem is that I can't really mess with my modem config, my ISP doesn't allow that I believe.
Anyway, any insights you may have are welcomed.
If you are behind a modem+router setup, then the modem prevents people from logging in because the IP for your server is based on your router wan, which is separated from the modem wan. This means that the modem doesn't know where your computer is (since it's in a different network) and rejects the query's to join.
The fix I found is rather simple... just plug yourself directly to the modem. Your game might not advertise properly but I have tried inviting people through steam and it did work (though my dedicated server didn't, I'm still working on that. You'll have to do the normal way).
A second way to fix this is by creating a static route on your modem that leads query's to your server into your private network (I'm sure someone can explain this better, I'm oversimplifying). This might not be possible if your ISP doesn't allow you to touch the settings on your modem so you might be out of luck.
Hopefully this is of some use to other people suffering the same problem.
Cheers.
